Cup Series Playoff Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Talladega

After a strange and controversial start to the Round of 12, the NASCAR Cup Series heads to the one of, if not the most, unpredictable tracks on the NASCAR circuit, Talladega. Here is a look at the 12 playoff drivers 2022 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2022 with ranking through 30 races since the Chase started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and Talladega statistics.

Outlook
Joey Logano was about the only playoff driver not to have trouble at Texas and that lands him at the 1 seed heading into Talladega. His 2022 stats are only bested by Chase Elliott as he ranks 6th or better in every category above. He has also finished in the Top 10 in half the races in the playoffs. So Joey is looking good. Then when you look at his Talladega stats they look even better. With 3 Wins, 9 Top 5’s and 14 Stage Top 10’s, this weekend could be setting up in Joey’s favor. While Talladega is a product of either getting caught up in the big one or not look for Joey to get Stage Points this weekend and if he avoids the wrecks possibly a Top 5 or even a Win as well.

Outlook
Ross Chastain has had one of the best seasons this year when you look at the stats. However, the last few months have not been kind to him he has 0 Top 5’s and only has 2 Top 10’s in the playoffs. To his credit though he does have 6 Stage Top 10’s in the playoffs. Back in the spring Ross won at Talladega leading only the last lap, but his overall Talladega stats do not look as good. He has finished outside the Top 20 more times than not. I foresee Stage Points for Ross but not necessarily a Top 10 at the end of the race. This is Talladega however and trying to handicap this is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Outlook
Kyle Larson 2022 stats are some of the best this year in all categories ranking 6th or better in every category mentioned above. He has 3 Top 10’s in the playoffs and 1 Stage Win. He had the fastest car at Texas until the night time but still got his 3rd straight Top 10. At Talladega in the spring, Larson finished 4th and ran up front all day accumulating 17 Stage points. Overall at Talladega though Larson’s stats aren’t pretty at all. He has finished outside the Top 20 in most of his starts, so looking at Talladega this weekend don’t expect much from Larson based on the stats. Top 15 would feel good for Larson and his fans.

Outlook
Still looking for that elusive 1st Win this year Ryan Blaney had a great race at Texas. His 2022 season has been really good statistically speaking besides not finishing in the Top 3 much. He has 2 Top 10’s in the playoffs so far and when looking at his Talladega statistics I could definitely see another Top 10 coming his way. He ranks pretty well in every category. If the stats hold and Ryan avoids trouble I see him getting a good chunk of Stage Points and Top 15 for sure. Top 5 perhaps and maybe that elusive 1st Win this year.

Outlook
Denny Hamlin had a controversial and interesting race at Texas, still though he managed to get another Top 10. That makes 4 Top 10’s in a row, his longest streak of the year. His 2022 stats aren’t great, but with him doing as well as he has in the playoffs are looking better. He didn’t do well at Talladega here in the spring but his overall stats are incredible. He has finished in the Top 10 as many times as he has finished outside the Top 20. If these stats hold true look for Hamlin to not necessarily get Stage Points, but finish in the Top 10 and perhaps better if he stays out of trouble.

Outlook
Daniel Suarez 2022 has been a mixed bag, very mediocre stats wise. The playoffs haven’t faired much better with only 1 Top 10 in 4 races. At Texas he got Stage Points but not a great finish, then again Texas was a mess so he should be happy a tire didn’t blow. At Talladega he should just be happy if he gets a Top 15 as his stats are far from pretty. He has an average finish of 22.09 and finished outside the Top 20 6 times, including in the spring this year. Bottomline Top 15 would be good for Suarez and I do not see a Top 10 in the offing this weekend.

Outlook
It’s no secret that Chase Elliott has had the best season this year. It is also no secret that the playoffs are not going the way this 9 team envisioned. He has only 1 Top 10 in the playoffs, a 2nd place finish at Bristol. Last week at Texas Elliott was leading when he was one of many leaders to blow a tire. His Talladega stats are very impressive. His percentage ranks are very impressive here he has finished outside the Top 20 as many times as in the Top 5. He also has the best average finish of any playoff driver. If he stays out of trouble this weekend definitely look for Chase Elliott to finish this race in the Top 10 and probably Top 5 at that.

  • 1 DNF, 33.33% (% ranks 30th)

Outlook
Besides Chase Briscoe’s lone win this year his stats are not that impressive. He did however get his first playoff Top 5 and Top 10 last weekend at Texas. He will look to finish in the Top 10 back to back weeks for the first time this season at Talladega. While he may look to finish in the Top 10, the reality is that he has not finished in the Top 10 once here. He does however have 2 Top 15’s. Briscoe has too small of a sample size at Talladega to see his stats as reliable, but if they are then look for a Top 15 run from Briscoe but not much else.

Outlook
Austin Cindric’s rookie year started with a bang, winning the Daytona 500. Since then it has been a bit of a struggle for the rookie. His stage stats are especially bad, not ranking better than 15th in the 2022 ranks in any stage category. His playoff stats have continued with this, he has 0 Top 10’s in the playoffs and only 6 Stage Points. He has one Talladega start and finished 21st, so there isn’t much to go off of. But as I said he won the Daytona 500 and was leading late in the summer Daytona race so I wouldn’t count Cindric out of a good finish at Talladega.

Outlook
This season started out great for William Byron, but then the rest of it happened and was not that great. Byron has only 9 Top 10’s on the season however, 4 of those have come in the playoffs. That’s right, he is 4 for 4 in the playoffs in Top 10’s. He led a lot of laps at Talladega in the spring, which isn’t unusual for him here. However the finishes are not pretty to look at with only 2 Top 10’s and 3 DNF’s. This weekend expect William Byron to be up front leading laps and finishing well in stages. However, I wouldn’t put my money on him finishing well.

Outlook
Christopher Bell 2022 statistics ranks 10th or better in every category above except Top 2’s. He also has 3 Top 10’s in the playoffs so far, but last week at Texas Bell was one of the many victims of having a tire blow putting him behind the 8-ball in the Round of 12. He finished 22nd here in the spring after starting from the pole and leading 7 laps. That is pretty much on par with how Bell does here usually, he has only 1 Top 5 which happened last year in a rain shortened race. Bell is already behind thanks Texas and with these stats I’m not seeing it get any better after Talladega. Bell needs a good run but all I see is Top 20 at best.

12 Seed – Alex Bowman

Outlook
When comparing Alex Bowman’s year to his teammates I would say it has been disappointing statistically wise. He only has 4 Top 5’s this year and one of those came in the playoffs. Last week Bowman was an early victim to the tire failures. His team did a good job of keeping him in the race however and getting points. This could prove all for not however when looking at Bowman’s Talladega stats. They have been terrible to put it nicely. He finished 2nd once but has twice as many finishes outside the Top 20 than in the Top 10 with 6 DNF’s as well. The good news is he finished 9th here in the spring, so while I do not expect a Top 10 from Alex he has shown this year that it can happen here.
