Xfinity Series Playoff Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Las Vegas

Two weeks ago we saw the end of Noah Gragson’s four race Xfinity win streak. Now after the Roval, A.J. Allmendinger is on a streak of his own winning the last two Xfinity races. Last week we also saw the playoff field cut from 12 to 8. Now the Xfinity Series heads to Las Vegas to begin the Round of 8. Here is a look at the 8 playoff drivers remaining 2022 season statistics, ranks among drivers in 2022 with ranking through 29 races since the playoffs starts in 2016. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 intermediate (1.3-1.5 miles) track statistics and Las Vegas statistics.

Outlook
Noah Gragson’s 2022 ranks above consist of almost every category ranking 1st or 2nd. Furthermore most of his ranking thru 29 races since 2016 are in the top 10, that is how impressive of a season Gragson is having. To go with this he was one of a handful of drivers to have a Top 10 in all 3 playoff races thus far, this is part of a 6 race Top 10 streak he is on. The news only gets worse for the competition as he has 3 Wins and led over 25% of the laps on intermediate tracks this year. He also has only finished outside the Top 10 twice on intermediates. He finished 2nd at Vegas in the spring after leading a lot of laps and also won both stages. Overall at Vegas Gragson’s stats are just plain stupid, even though he has no Wins he has a Top 10 in every start here and only once finished outside the Top 5. I see a good run this weekend for Gragson getting a for sure Top 5 and I think he will get that first Vegas win this weekend, punching his ticket to the Championship 4.

Outlook
A.J. Allmendinger’s 2022 season is similar to that of Noah Gragson’s in that he ranks mostly 1st and 2nd in 2022 ranks above and he ranks in the top 10 of most categories thru 29 races. What’s more is that Allmendinger’s playoffs have been amazing accumulating 2 Wins and 3 Top 5’s. These are apart of an impressive 11 straight Top 10 streak which isn’t even the longest he has had this season. Basically Allmendinger is Top 10ing the Xfinity Series to death this year. In 8 starts on intermediate tracks he has only 2 Top 5’s but 6 Top 10’s. This spring Allmendinger won the Pole and led the first 32 laps coming home 9th at the end of the day. Overall at Vegas he has only 3 races so not much to go off of, but he has 1 Win and never finished outside the Top 10. At the end of the day I see Allmendinger coming home with Stage Points and a Top 10, a Top 5 not so much but I also would not be surprised if he won.

Outlook
Ty Gibbs is apart of what could be considered the big 4 of the Xfinity Series ranking 2nd or 3rd in most 2022 ranks above. He also ranks no lower than 23rd in the thru 29 ranks above. In the 3 playoff races he has 2 Top 3’s and 3 Top 10’s, so it is no shock he is here in the Round of 8. His intermediate stats this year have been outstanding having 1 Win and a Top 3 in half of the 8 races this year. In fact only once has he finished outside the Top 15. More good news ahead, the Xfinity is heading back to Las Vegas where Gibbs won this year after getting the jump on Noah Gragson on a late race restart. Gibbs only has 2 starts here so not much to go off of, but he has finished in the Top 10 of all 4 stages. I see Gibbs coming home with a Top 10 and if all goes right probably a Top 5 or even Top 3 and fighting for the win. Simply put it seems it will be between Gragson, Allmendinger and Gibbs for the win on Saturday.

Outlook
The 2022 season statistically for Justin Allgaier has been really good ranking 5th or better in every 2022 rank above, yet he is still not among the championship favorites. The first round of the playoffs did not start out well for Allgaier who only got 1 Top 10 and was saved by his 38 Stage Points he accumulated. I feel Allgaier will have to have better in the Round of 8 to move on to the Championship 4. The good news is that he has been great on intermediate tracks this year. Allgaier has 2 Wins and 6 Top 5’s in 8 intermediate starts this year, while the only time he finished outside the Top 10 was a crash at Texas (when he was running up front by the way). At Vegas in the spring Allgaier finished 5th after leading a race high 62 laps. Overall here he’s done very well, he has finished in the Top 5 in half his races and only once outside the Top 15 and that was a DNF. I see Allgaier getting Stage Points and then coming home with a Top 5 probably, but for sure a Top 10.

Outlook
Josh Berry starts the Round of 8 just below the cutline which is right in line with his 2022 stats. Berry’s 2022 ranks are just outside of the top 4 in most categories but have been impressive. In the first round Berry was not spectacular but was consistent having only 1 Top 5 but 3 Top 10’s, in fact Berry is on a streak of 6 straight Top 10 finishes. His intermediate stats this year match his playoffs as he has only 2 Top 5’s but 6 Top 10’s and of course he has 1 Win at an intermediate this year. Oh, he did win here at Las Vegas last year as well. In the spring although he didn’t lead any laps he ran well coming home with a 4th place and 11 Stage Points. His sample size overall at Vegas isn’t a lot (only 3 races) but he does have a win and no finish worse than 7th. I look for that to continue this weekend, while I won’t say he finishes 7th or better. I will say he gets Stage Points and another Top 10 to make it 7 straight Top 10’s.

Outlook
Austin Hill is the biggest surprise of the 2022 season to me, his 2022 ranks above aren’t lower than 8th in any category but also not better than 5th. This shows Hill has been consistent this year, but the reason he got into the Round of 8 was his Stage Points. Hill accumulated the most Stage Points of any driver in the first round of the playoffs with 40. At intermediate tracks this year Hill has been average with an 11.38 average finish and 5 Top 10’s. Hill’s only finish outside the Top 15 at an intermediate track this year was here at Las Vegas though where he wrecked out late. The good news however is that he was running Top 5 when he got wrecked out so he definitely had speed. Unfortunately though Las Vegas has not been kind as Hill has 0 Top 15’s in 2 starts, so not a big sample size but still worrisome. With that being said if Hill can stay out of trouble and finish he definitely comes home with a Top 15 and probably Top 10, but I don’t see a Top 5.

Outlook
Brandon Jones has probably had the worst 2022 season of any Round of 8 driver statistically speaking. Jones ranks no better than 6th in the 2022 ranks above besides Poles. To further show this he only has 12 Top 10’s in 29 races, but in the Round of 12 Jones got 2 Top 10’s which he needed in order to beat Ryan Sieg. His intermediate stats this year aren’t mind blowing but aren’t bad either. Jones has 3 Poles but an average finish of 13.25 and only 3 Top 10’s in 8 races he also has 6 Top 15’s. However, as a JGR driver I think most people expect more from him. After gaining a few Stage Points at Las Vegas in the spring Jones came home a modest 10th which is right around average for him here. He has a good track record here as far as Top 10’s, having 8 in 11 races and his only finish outside the Top 15 being a DNF. Essentially if Jones stays out of trouble this Saturday then he finishes Top 15 and probably Top 10 but not Top 5.

Sam Mayer is in the same boat as Brandon Jones as far as the 2022 ranks above. He ranks between 6th and 10th in most categories showing that he’s been ok but not elite. However it is nice to see that in the Xfinity Series all 8 drivers in the Round of 8 are deserving of it. Mayer did exactly what I expected last week and got Stage Points to advance to this round. He has 2 Top 10’s in the playoffs and 5 Stage Top 10’s but only 23 Stage Points. At intermediates this year Mayer has run well with 6 Top 10’s and only one finish outside the Top 15, however that one was here at Las Vegas in the spring. Mayer ran great all race but ended up 25th after a wreck compromised his car, so I am not too concerned. Still though, his overall stats here are ugly with a 29.5 average finish and best of 25th in his 2 starts. Like I said though I am not concerned I see Mayer coming home with a Top 10 if he stays out of trouble, however I am not seeing a Top 5 in his future.
