Xfinity Series Playoff Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Martinsville

After the Homestead domination by Noah Gragson there are 2 spots clinched in the Championship 4. That means there are only 2 spots left and 1 race to decided who those 2 spots will go to. Here is a look at the 8 playoff drivers remaining 2022 season statistics, ranks among drivers in 2022 with ranking through 31 races since the playoffs starts in 2016. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 short track (under 1 mile) statistics and Martinsville statistics.

Outlook
With a win last week Noah Gragson is in the Championship 4, and probably would have been without it. Gragson’s 2022 season has been great as he does not rank worse than 2nd in most 2022 ranks above and doesn’t rank worse than 7th in most Thru 31 races ranks above as well. The playoffs have been no different as he has a Top 10 in every race and a Top 3 in every race but Talladega. If that’s not good enough he also has a Top 3 finish in the last 3 races. At short tracks this year his average finish of 14th and only 1 Top 15 aren’t great but it’s only 3 races, Gragson does have a win on a short track this year though. At Martinsville in the spring Gragson was running Top 5 but got caught up in a melee at the end and came home 20th. Despite that Gragson has an average finish of 6.5 here and 3 Top 3’s in 4 races. Gragson doesn’t need a good run this weekend but I see him getting one anyway. As long as he’s not wrecked he gets a Top 5 for sure.

Outlook
Josh Berry showed up to Homestead and that’s all he did coming home 11th ending his career long 7 race Top 10 streak. That’s all he needed to do though since he won at Las Vegas. This was also the first race outside the Top 10 in the playoffs for Berry as he still sits at 1 Win, 2 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s in the playoffs. Short tracks this year have been good for Berry as he has 2 Top 10’s in 3 races and 4 Stage Pts Per Stage. At Martinsville in the spring he was running in the Top 10 before getting caught up in a big late accident and ended up 19th. Including that race Berry has 3 races here and 1 Win, but that’s his only Top 15. Berry doesn’t need to impress this weekend and I don’t feel he will. I see Berry coming home with a couple Stage Points and a Top 10 if avoids the mayhem that is Martinsville.

Outlook
Ty Gibbs to some’s dismay and some’s joy had another 2nd place finish this past weekend to put him 30 points above the cutline. Gibbs has been the most consistent driver this year in stages and finishes as he ranks 2nd or 3rd in every 2022 rank above. It would be a shame if he missed the Championship 4 honestly because even his playoff stats are pleasing to the eyes. He has 2 Top 2’s, 3 Top 3’s, 4 Top 5’s and 5 Top 10’s in 5 races. So duh, he has a 5 race Top 10 streak going but even more impressive a 3 straight Top 5 streak. At short tracks this year Gibbs has led 62.5% of laps he’s run, 3 Poles, 1 Win, 2 Top 10’s and 6.0 Stage Pts Per Stage in 3 races. At Martinsville in the spring Gibbs dominated, but well I think we all remember how that race ended with him and Sam Mayer. All in all Gibbs runs well here as he has 2 Top 10’s in 3 races. I see more good results for Gibbs this weekend starting 1st, getting a Top 5 probably and Top 10 for sure.

Outlook
A.J. Allmendinger needed a great run at Homestead to get himself closer to the cutline and he got just that. Allmendinger came home 3rd with 15 Stage Points and 5 points above the cutline. This year as a whole Allmendinger has been really good as he ranks 1st in Top 10’s and T2nd in Stage T10’s, he also ranks no worse than 5th in any 2022 rank above. With the exception of Las Vegas he’s continued that into the playoffs with 4 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s in the playoffs and the 2nd most Stage Points with 59. His stats get stupid impressive when it comes to short tracks as he has finished between 3rd and 6th in all 3 races this year, yet has not led a lap haha. In the spring at Martinsville, Allmendinger avoided the chaos to come home with his best finish here of 3rd. That is his only Top 5 here but he does have 2 Top 10’s in 4 starts. I see Allmendinger this weekend being upfront all day getting around 10 Stage Points and a Top 10 finish for sure.

Outlook
Homestead for Justin Allgaier was a typical run for him here, not good. He has been the Stage King this year ranking 1st in Stage T10’s and Stage Pts almost all year, but at Homestead he only got 1 Stage Pt. This and a 10th place finish has Allgaier 5 points below the cut. His playoffs this year fit the Stage King with only 3 Top 10’s in 5 races but 9 Stage T10’s in 10 Stages. He will need more than Stage Points to advance to the Championship 4 though as Allgaier’s stats at short tracks this year are a concerning, he has only 1 Top 10 in the 3 races. In the spring at Martinsville Allgaier got caught up in the big wreck late placing him 29th at the end of the day. This is not indicative of his stats here though as that was his first race not finishing in the Top 10 at Martinsville. He also has 2 Top 5’s in 4 starts so I see a good race coming for him. I see Allgaier getting Stage Points and a Top 10 with a shot at a Top 5 and in a tight battle for the 4th spot in the Championship 4.

Outlook
Austin Hill did what he needed to do at Homestead to stay in the championship hunt, a Top 10 with 13 Stage Points. He’s now 7 points below the cutline and with a good run could make it to the Championship 4 in his first full-time season. His stats this year are surprisingly consistent ranking between 5th and 8th in the 2022 ranks above. However the secret to his success in the playoffs has been Stage Points. Hill has the most Stage Points of any driver in the playoffs with 69. Another surprise is Hill’s success at short tracks this year, he has 2 Top 5’s with a best finish of 3rd in 3 short track races but very little Stage Points. His only Martinsville race was here in the spring and he avoided the carnage to finish 4th. There isn’t much to go off of for Hill but based on his season and playoffs I see him running in the Top 10 and get Stage Points. At the end of the day if he stays clean he gets a Top 10, with luck a Top 5 and maybe a Championship 4 birth.

Outlook
The good news for Sam Mayer after Homestead was that he had a Top 5 and gained 8 points on the cutline. The bad news for Sam Mayer is he’s still 28 points below the cutline. His 2022 stats have been impressive not ranking lower than 12th in the 2022 ranks above but also not being higher than 5th. In the playoffs Mayer has a 2nd place finish, 4 Top 10’s and 9 Stage T10’s in the 5 races, so he’s done nothing wrong but shows how good the drivers he’s going against has been. The good thing for Mayer is a short track is coming up and he’s been amazing this year finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th in the 3 races. Mayer has also done very well at Martinsville. He finished 5th in the spring after a tussle with Ty Gibbs and creating a huge wreck on the penultimate restart. In his only other race here he finished 4th so look for Mayer to run well and get a Top 5 Saturday. Unfortunately though for Mayer he is essentially in a must-win situation and I don’t see him winning.

Outlook
Brandon Jones needed a good run at Homestead and he didn’t get it at all. Now he sits in a must-win situation 38 points below the cutline. Jones in 2022 has been consistent with his 2022 ranks above being between 6th and 9th mostly, but that’s just not good enough. The playoffs have been even worse though as Jones has 0 Top 5’s. There is hope however for him as we head to a short track where Jones has done well this year. He has a 5.33 average finish and 2 Top 3’s with one being a win here in the spring. While he did win the race he did kind of steal it from Ty Gibbs late. But a win is a win and when looking at Martinsville as a whole Jones has impressed. He has the Win, 2 Top 5’s and never finished worse than 9th in 4 starts. Jones needs a win to make the Championship 4 but I only see him finishing around 5th. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if he wound up in victory lane this weekend.
