Welcome, over the next week and a half we will be reviewing and rating how each driver in the NASCAR Cup series has done in the 2022 season (min. 15 races started). Each part will contain 3-5 drivers and have them grouped by organization/satellite team or car manufacturer as best as possible. The review will include the drivers 2022 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2022 with season ranking since the Chase started in 2004. We will also highlight playoff stats, notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 short track (under 1.0 mile), small track (1.0-1.3 mile), intermediate track (1.3-1.5 mile), big track (2-2.5 mile), road course, superspeedway (drafting tracks) and dirt track statistics. Then I will give a brief summary/review, finally ending with a grade A+ thru F-.
First up is the championship team, Team Penske, drivers and Wood Brothers Racing driver.

Summary
Joey Logano is the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Champion so that automatically gives him some brownie points in his grade. Looking at the 2022 as a whole you can’t say Logano didn’t deserve it either. He had the 3rd best average finish of 13.47 and his 2022 ranks above are no worse than 7th. When you take out his DNF’s and compare his season to others since 2004 he ranks Top 150 in almost every category. Logano’s playoffs weren’t too shabby either, sure he only had the 7th most Top 10’s but he was the best or tied for best in Wins, Poles, Top 2’s and Top 3’s. Basically when he wasn’t outside the Top 10 he was up front. While his average finish at Superspeedways and Road Courses was outside the Top 15, Logano was really good at the other tracks as his worst average finish was 12.6. His best tracks however were the 2 miles and Pocono, where he had a Top 5 in 2 of the 3 races. His other good tracks were Short/Small tracks where he led a combined 25.64% of laps he ran on them. Overall Logano had a solid year and was one of the best drivers this year.

Summary
Ryan Blaney was probably the best driver not to win this year, he had the 4th best average finish at 13.61 and ended the season with 2 straight Top 3’s. His stats this year were not great looking at Wins thru Top 3’s, but he did great in stages, Top 5’s and Top 10’s with his worst 2022 ranking being 5th. Blaney had a long run into the playoffs despite a 13.4 average finish which ranked T8th, the reason for his success was his stage stats. In the playoffs Blaney was great in stages being 1st in every playoff stage rank above. When looking at his Superspeedway track stats its hard to see why he didn’t win, Blaney didn’t finish outside the Top 15 on a Superspeedway and had an average finish of 9.0 which ranked T1st. It’s puzzling too when seeing he had an average finish of 10.8 on Short and Small tracks. However Blaney’s Intermediate and Big track stats are not pretty as he had a 16.8 and 18.67 average finish respectively on these tracks. Overall Blaney had a good season even without a Win, but winning is what it is all about now a days.

Summary
Austin Cindric got rookie of the year honors this year as he was the only rookie in the playoffs, and for a rookie year wasn’t bad. His stats weren’t great though as his 2022 ranks above are no better than 7th and he even ranks T21st in Top 10’s, but that win in the Daytona 500 allowed him into the playoffs. Looking at Cindric’s playoff stats it’s puzzling how he nearly made the Round of 8 as he only had 1 Top 10 and 28 Stage Pts in the playoffs. His track stats are probably what most people expected. Cindric did good at Road Courses and Superspeedways with the 3rd best Average Finish at both styles of tracks (9.33 and 11.5) and had 8 Top 10’s in 12 races, however the other tracks were not so good. His average finish was 16th or worse at all other 5 track types with only 1 Top 10 in 24 races on them. Overall Cindric’s season was not bad for a rookie but also not a great season when you take Road Courses and Superspeedways away.

Summary
Harrison Burton’s rookie season was… well it just was. The highlight of the season for him was his 3rd place finish at the Indianapolis Road Course. His best 2022 rank above is T17th in Poles and that is only because 16 drivers got a Pole this year. Furthermore he had almost as many DNF’s (7) as Stage T10’s (11). He was consistent though as his overall average finish and playoff average finish was around 22.7. In the playoffs though Burton did not get a single Top 10, had 2 DNF’s and only 1 Stage T10. His best track type was Short tracks as he had an average finish of 19.2 and only 2 of his 5 starts ended up outside the Top 20. His worst by far was 2 mile tracks and Pocono as he had an average finish better than only J.J. Yeley with 29.33 on those style tracks. Overall it was a major struggle for the rookie with no average finish rank being better than 20th on any style track, but next year is a new year with new hope and possibilities for Burton.
