Welcome, this is the fifth post of a week and a half series reviewing and rating how each driver in the NASCAR Cup series has done in the 2022 season (min. 15 races started). Each part will contain 3-5 drivers and have them grouped by organization/satellite team or car manufacturer as best as possible. The review will include the drivers 2022 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2022 with season ranking since the Chase started in 2004. We will also highlight playoff stats, notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 short track (under 1.0 mile), small track (1.0-1.3 mile), intermediate track (1.3-1.5 mile), big track (2-2.5 mile), road course, superspeedway (drafting tracks) and dirt track statistics. Then I will give a brief summary/review, finally ending with a grade A+ thru F-.

Summary
Chase Briscoe defied the odds and not only made it out of the first round but made the Round of 8. When looking at his 2022 stats it makes sense why people doubted him though. Briscoe had an average finish of 17.33 which is 20th in the 2022 ranks above and only had 10 Top 10’s this year. So how did Briscoe make the Round of 8? Briscoe’s playoffs were one of the better ones this year, besides stages. He had 3 Top 5’s and 6 Top 10’s, 4 straight at one point, in the playoffs which both rank 6th or better. Briscoe also had a 13.1 playoff average finish which was 7th best. As far as tracks go Briscoe’s best tracks were Small tracks as he had the 5th best average finish on them at 11.4 and had 2 Top 5’s in 5 starts. Short tracks were also good for Briscoe as he had 4 Top 15’s in 5 starts, but beyond these two styles Briscoe was not good. His best average finish at any other style was 17.0 at Big tracks, with the worst of these being Intermediates where he had only 3 Top 10’s in 10 races and an average finish of 20.2. Overall this year Briscoe’s season should be classified as a success since he made the Round of 8, but he will need to do much better in order to replicate that next year.

Kevin Harvick’s 2022 season wasn’t as good as most would have thought but isn’t as bad as it seemed when you look at the stats. When you take away stages, DNF’s and Poles his 2022 ranks above are between 5th and 9th, including the 7th best average finish at 14.33. Harvick was also the only driver to win back-to-back races this year and he came into the playoffs hot. In the playoffs Harvick wasn’t too great though, at least not in the first round. Overall Harvick’s non-stage stats are mostly 10th or better in the playoffs, but he did have a 17.0 average finish which shows his inconsistency. Harvick was pretty good at most tracks this year only struggling at the Bristol Dirt race and Superspeedways. Harvick only had 1 Top 10 in 6 Superspeedway starts and an average finish of worse than 20th. At the rest of the track styles his worst average finish was 15.2 at Intermediates. Harvick’s best tracks were Short tracks as he had an average finish of 8.6 with 3 Top 10’s and a worst finish of 16th. Overall there were good and bad to Harvick’s season and while I feel he deserved better than 15th in points, he also wasn’t near championship contention all year.

Summary
Aric Almirola’s 2022 season was not terrible if the season stopped after 26 races, but as far as a whole season the only 2022 ranks above better than 19th are his DNF’s and Poles. His 17.81 average finish this year was below average of the drivers with 15+ starts this year and his playoffs were even worse. There were 26 drivers to score a Top 10 in the playoffs and Almirola wasn’t one of them, he also had the same amount of DNF’s as Stage Pts (1). On track styles this year Almirola was pretty consistent though as his average finish ranges from 13.83 to 17.67 except on Road Courses and the Bristol Dirt race. His best tracks were Superspeedways were he had a 13.83 average finish and 4 Top 15 finishes in 6 races. His worst were Road Courses were he had a best finish of 14th and an average finish of 23.83 which is below the likes of Ty Dillon, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Todd Gilliland. Almirola’s 2022 season was very rough, especially in the playoffs, but he is coming back next year and will be hoping for a much better run than this year I’m sure.

Summary
To sum up Cole Custer’s 2022 season he had more DNF’s (7) than Top 10’s (3), that’s how bad his season was. His average finish was a measly 20.58 and ranked 27th out of 39 qualified drivers. His playoffs were actually better believe it or not as he had a 19.8 average finish and the same amount of Top 10’s and DNF’s with 1 each. That’s all there is to say really before moving to his track stats. Custer’s best tracks average finish wise was the Dirt track where he finished 13th. Overall though I’d say his best tracks were Road Courses where his average finish was 17.17 and he had 1 Top 10 and 3 Top 15’s in 6 races. His worst was by far Intermediates as he had an average finish of 24.3 which ranked 35th out of 45 drivers to compete on an Intermediate this year. Custer also had 0 Top 10’s and only 1 Top 15 this year on them. All in all Custer’s 2022 season was bad and if he gets ousted at SHR for Ryan Preece I can see why, but if he doesn’t he will need to do much better in 2023 than he did this year to stay in the 41 car long term.

*Edit from original writing, the news came out today, 11/16/22, that Custer is going to the 00 Car in the Xfinity Series. Therefore his projection has changed and I see Custer being pretty dominant in the Xfinity field next year as he works his way back up to the Cup Series in due time.
