Welcome, this is the second post of a week and a half series reviewing and rating how each driver in the NASCAR Cup series has done in the 2022 season (min. 15 races started). Each part will contain 3-5 drivers and have them grouped by organization/satellite team or car manufacturer as best as possible. The review will include the drivers 2022 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2022 with season ranking since the Chase started in 2004. We will also highlight playoff stats, notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 short track (under 1.0 mile), small track (1.0-1.3 mile), intermediate track (1.3-1.5 mile), big track (2-2.5 mile), road course, superspeedway (drafting tracks) and dirt track statistics. Then I will give a brief summary/review, finally ending with a grade A+ thru F-.
Next up is two surprise teams of 2022, TrackHouse Racing drivers and Richard Childress Racing drivers.

Summary
Ross Chastain was in my eyes the biggest surprise this year. He was also loved, then hated, then loved again by fans. His 2022 ranks above show how he finished 2nd in points this year ranking 7th or better in every category except DNF’s and Poles. To that point he ranked 1st or 2nd in average finish and Top 2’s thru Top 10’s showing that Chastain continuously finished Top 10 and better. Chastain did not slow down once the playoffs came around either having the 4th best average finish at 9.8, he also ranked 2nd or better in Top 2’s thru Top 10’s in the playoffs and ending with 4 straight Top 5’s. As far as tracks go Chastain’s best tracks were definitely Small tracks. Chastain had an average finish of 4.8 and never finished outside the Top 10 on a small track this year. On the other hand his worst was Big tracks as he tied Josh Bilicki for 36th in average finish at 28.33. When looking at the stats above the biggest take away is how consistent Chastain was this year having good average finishes at most track types and finishing Top 10 a lot. Next year Chastain won’t be sneaking up on anyone and the expectations will be high.

Summary
In his sophomore season at TrackHouse Racing Daniel Suarez got his first win in the NASCAR Cup Series. Apart from that Suarez’s season wasn’t too great but was consistent. His 2022 ranks above are mostly between 11th and 18th and his average finish in the 2022 season as a whole and playoffs are both 16.5. Speaking of playoffs, Suarez had 3 Top 10’s and was tied for the 6th most Stage T10’s but apart from that there wasn’t much else. Suarez’s best tracks this year were the Big tracks, which is opposite of his teammate. Suarez had an average finish of 10.67 and had 2 Top 5’s in 3 race this year on these tracks. Other than this his average finishes on tracks were 15th or worse. Suarez did have 3 Top 5’s on Road Courses though so he ran good on them, but he also had 3 finishes outside the Top 20 on Road Courses as well. Overall when taking out Short and Intermediate tracks Suarez had a pretty good season and probably his best season yet in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Summary
Before the Daytona rain race Austin Dillon didn’t seem destined to make the playoffs, but he won the race and ended up 11th in points. His 2022 ranks above aren’t all that great as all of them are 9th or worse, he had 8 DNF’s which ranked 35th out of 39 drivers who started 15+ starts. Looking at his playoffs stats it is honestly amazing how he finished 11th in points as he had 2 DNF’s, only had 1 Top 5 and 15 Stage Pts in the 10 races. When you take a gander at Dillon’s track stats it’s easy to see his best tracks were Big and Intermediate tracks. Even though Dillon won at Daytona and had 2 Top 2’s at Superspeedways he also had 3 DNF’s. At Big tracks he had 3 Top 15’s in 3 races and the 4th best average finish with 8.33. At Intermediates Dillon had 7 Top 15’s in 10 races and the 7th best average finish with 13.1. The rest weren’t great but not awful as they were all, except dirt, above 20.0 in average finish. Overall if Dillon could have kept his car on the track and finished races he could have had a much better season Top 15 and Top 10 wise.

Summary
Tyler Reddick was tied for the 3rd most wins in 2022 with 3, but ranked 21st in average finish with 17.56. The reason for this is Reddick’s 8 DNF’s which was only 1 off of tying for most in the Cup Series this year. Other than average finish and DNF Reddick was 10th or better in every 2022 non-stage rank above. Heading into the playoffs Reddick was a favorite in many peoples eyes, but went out in the first round and ended up 14th in points. His stats in the playoffs aren’t all that bad though as most stats rank 11th or better, but his average finish of 19.9 ranked 25th and he tied for the most DNF’s in the playoffs. Reddick’s track stats are Jekyll and Hide as he did really good at Intermediates, Road Courses and the Bristol Dirt, but was really bad at Short tracks and Superspeedways. A partial illustration of this is that on Road Courses Reddick had 5 Top 10’s in 6 races, but had 0 Top 10’s in 5 Short track races and in 6 Superspeedway races Reddick had 4 DNF’s. Overall Reddick had a strong last season at RCR, but his DNF’s did him in and in 2023 if he can be more consistent watch out for him to be a title contender.
