Welcome, this is the fourth post of a week and a half series reviewing and rating how each driver in the NASCAR Cup series has done in the 2022 season (min. 15 races started). Each part will contain 3-5 drivers and have them grouped by organization/satellite team or car manufacturer as best as possible. The review will include the drivers 2022 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2022 with season ranking since the Chase started in 2004. We will also highlight playoff stats, notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 short track (under 1.0 mile), small track (1.0-1.3 mile), intermediate track (1.3-1.5 mile), big track (2-2.5 mile), road course, superspeedway (drafting tracks) and dirt track statistics. Then I will give a brief summary/review, finally ending with a grade A+ thru F-.

Summary
Chase Elliott was easily the favorite heading into the playoffs this year, but he struggled in the playoffs barely making the Championship 4. When looking at his 2022 ranks above all but 3 categories rank either 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Elliott also had the best average finish this year at 12.47, however his playoff average of 17.5 ranked 17th. This is puzzling as he did have 2 Top 2’s but he couldn’t find a Top 10 if it bit his butt as he only had 3 in 10 races, essentially Elliott either finished Top 2 or outside the Top 10. When it comes to style of tracks this year it is clear Elliott’s worst track was Intermediates, he had an average finish of 19.1 (ranked 23rd) and the same amount of DNF’s and Top 10’s with 3 each. Furthermore he had 5 Top 15’s but also 5 finishes outside the Top 20. On the more positive side Elliott was amazing at Short tracks finishing no worse than 14th at a Short track this year. Road Courses and Superspeedways were also good for Elliott as he had a 9.0 average finish at both and had 9 Top 10’s in 12 races. Overall Elliott’s season was really good and could have been great if he had performed better in the playoffs, but he definitely deserved better than 4th in points.

William Byron started 2022 on fire winning 2 of the first 8 races, having 3 Top 3’s and 4 Top 5’s in that span as well. While Kyle Larson finished 7th in the drivers points his number 5 team finished 3rd in owner points and had 3 straight Top 10’s to round out 2022. Still though these results have to be disappointing to the 2021 champ. In terms of his 2022 season Larson performed admirably as he does not rank worse than 6th in the 2022 ranks above, except for DNF’s. This shows how consistent Larson was this year as do his playoff stats. In the playoffs Larson ranked no worse than 8th in any of the categories, except DNF’s again. In terms of tracks Larson only had 2 bad styles, but unfortunately for Larson it was Road Courses and Superspeedways which accounted for a third of the schedule. At these two track styles he had an average finish of 19.67 and 22.33 respectively with 3 Top 10’s and 6 finishes out of the Top 20 in 12 races. As far as his good tracks Big tracks top the list, Larson finished no worse than 7th in the 3 races this year. Short tracks and Intermediates weren’t bad either as he had 7 Top 5’s in those 15 races this year. While Larson’s 2022 was not what he wanted it was still a really good season and he will be one to reckon with next year.

Summary
It was nice to see Alex Bowman able to race at Phoenix after his head injury sidelined him for 5 races, but I think Bowman is just ready to move onto 2023. His 2022 was not that great, he had 1 Win, but only 2 Top 3’s, 4 Top 5’s and 104 Stage Pts which even in 31 races is not good. In the playoffs Bowman only raced 5 times but did accumulate 2 Top 10’s in those 5 races. Unfortunately though when he wasn’t Top 10 he was far from it as he had a 21.8 average finish. He was also not good in stages only getting 4 Stage T10’s in those 5 races. Speaking of stages, Bowman did not have any track style with more than 2.5 Stage Pts Per Stages and most were under 2.0. Besides the Bristol Dirt race the best tracks for Bowman were Intermediates as he had 1 Win and 5 Top 10’s in 8 races on them. His stats were pretty much around the same at all track styles but his worst would be Small tracks were he had only 1 Top 10 in 5 races and an average finish of 20.6. For Bowman this year it’s hard to say where he woulda finished points wise if it weren’t for his injury, but either way he will need to improve his stats next year in order to be anywhere close to his teammates.
