Welcome, this is the sixth post of a week and a half series reviewing and rating how each driver in the NASCAR Cup series has done in the 2022 season (min. 15 races started). Each part will contain 3-5 drivers and have them grouped by organization/satellite team or car manufacturer as best as possible. The review will include the drivers 2022 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2022 with season ranking since the Chase started in 2004. We will also highlight playoff stats, notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 short track (under 1.0 mile), small track (1.0-1.3 mile), intermediate track (1.3-1.5 mile), big track (2-2.5 mile), road course, superspeedway (drafting tracks) and dirt track statistics. Then I will give a brief summary/review, finally ending with a grade A+ thru F-.

Summary
Erik Jones had a solid season in the first year of Petty GMS Motorsports and got them a win at the Southern 500 in September. Besides the Win category no 2022 rank above is better than 12th, but none are worse than 20th either showing a consistent season for Jones. He did end up with 13 Top 10’s and an average finish of 16.25 which was better than a few drivers who made the playoffs. Speaking of playoffs Jones was the best of the non-playoff drivers in the playoffs having the 10th best average finish at 14.4, racking up a Win and 4 Top 10’s in the 10 races as well. Despite the success this year Jones struggled at Short tracks this year with only a 22.0 average finish, a best finish of 13th, and 3 finishes outside the Top 20 in 5 races this year. He also struggled at Intermediates this year having only 3 Top 10’s in 10 races. The other tracks he was decent on with Big tracks being his best tracks this year. In 3 Big track races Jones had an average finish of 6.67 ranking 2nd behind Kyle Larson and a worst finish of 9th. Overall considering Jones didn’t win until the playoffs started 2022 was a step in the right direction for him, but he needs to pick it up next year to keep the improvement going.

Summary
Ty Dillon’s 2022 season was not what he was expecting for sure. In his first and last year with Petty GMS Dillon accumulated an average finish of 22.56, 1 Top 10, 5 Stage T10’s and 9 DNF’s, the DNF’s tied Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for most in the Cup Series this year. There was really nothing good about this season for Dillon, even his playoff stats aren’t that good. In the playoffs Dillon got 0 Top 10’s and 0 Stage T10’s with a 24.8 average finish in the 10 races. In terms of track stats the best tracks for Dillon was Dirt races. The one race on dirt this year Dillon got his only Top 10, finishing 10th, and this is the only track style with an average finish under 15.0 for him. Besides this one race Dillon’s best tracks were Big tracks where in his 3 races he scored 1 Top 15 and had an average finish of 17.67. His worst tracks were pretty much everything else, but specifically Small tracks. At Small track Dillon had an average finish of 25.6 and 4 finishes outside the Top 20 with only one of those being a DNF. Altogether Dillon’s 2022 was a dumpster fire especially with his teammate doing so much better, and with him moving to Spire Motorsports next year it will be hard for 2023 to be better than 2022.

Summary
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s 2022 season consisted of 1 Top 5 (a 2nd at Dover), 5 Top 10’s, 9 DNF’s and an average finish of 22.78. The DNF’s tied Ty Dillon for most this year and his 2nd place at Dover was the start of a 4 race Top 10 streak. Other than those 4 races Stenhouse was not good and his playoff stats show that. In the 10 playoff races Stenhouse had 0 Top 10’s, 3 Stage T10’s and an average finish of 25.8 which ranked 33rd out of 37 drivers with 5+ playoff starts. As far as track styles go Stenhouse’s best style of track average finish was 19.0 on Intermediate tracks. These were his best tracks as he had 3 Top 10’s, 4 Top 15’s, only 1 DNF and a best finish of 7th. His worst tracks were Short tracks in which he had a 26.4 average finish which ranked 33rd of 40 drivers who made a start on a Short track this year. To make it worse Stenhouse best finish was 22nd on Short tracks, and in 5 races only DNF’d once which shows how bad he did. Overall this year Stenhouse was very bad as he didn’t even have a Top 20 on Superspeedways, which he is known for doing well at. Next year if he doesn’t do well he may be out of his ride even with his contract extension he signed earlier this year.
