Truck Series Playoff Drivers & Other Notables Statistics & Outlook: Phoenix

After Ty Majeski’s win at Homestead we now know who the 4 drivers that are in contention for the championship this weekend at Phoenix are. Here is a look at those 4 championship contenders and 4 other notable drivers 2022 season statistics, ranks among drivers in 2022 with ranking through 22 races since the playoffs starts in 2016. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2022 small (under 1.3 miles) track statistics and Phoenix statistics.

Outlook
Zane Smith won his 1st stage of the playoffs and came home 2nd at Homestead, comfortably above the cutline. If he weren’t in the Championship 4 it would be ridiculous because Zane is 1st or 2nd in every 2022 rank above except Poles. He also is 10th or better in the Most Thru 22 Ranks above as well, showing how good his season has been. Even without a win the playoffs have been good for Zane, he has 3 Top 3’s, 4 Top 5’s and 5 Top 10’s in 6 races. At small tracks this year Zane has not finished outside the Top 10 in 5 races, but only has 2 Top 5’s as well. The good news for Zane is that Phoenix is the championship race and in his 2 starts here his worst finish is a 5th, which came last year. As I said he only has 2 starts here so there isn’t much to go off of, but look for Zane to be up front all day as he has never finished outside the Top 10 in a stage here. This weekend I see a for sure Top 5 for Zane with a high probability of carrying home the race and Camping World Truck Series Championship trophy.

Outlook
Chandler Smith was unimpressive at Homestead 2 weeks ago coming home 10th. When looking at Chandler’s 2022 ranks above it is shocking to me that he is 4th or worst in most categories. His best category other than Wins is Top 10’s as he is 2nd in the 2022 ranks. This follows along with his playoff stats as he has 1 Win, but that is his only Top 5. Chandler does have 4 Top 10’s, 4 Stage Wins and the most Stage Points with 75 though. At small tracks this year Chandler has been pretty good with a 7.4 average finish and leading over 30% of laps he’s run. To that point he also has a Win, 2 Top 3’s and 4 Top 10’s in 5 starts on these style tracks. Last year at Phoenix Chandler won everything he could the Pole, Stage 1, Stage 2 and the race. This year if he replicates that then he’s the champion, which is a good possibility looking at his Phoenix stats. Chandler has 3 races here which have resulted in a Win and two 3rds. Taking all this in it is hard to say Chandler will run like he has the rest of the playoffs, I see him coming home with a Top 10 for sure, Top 5 most likely and a Smith vs. Smith battle for the championship.

Outlook
After winning Stage 1 at Homestead Ben Rhodes controversially made his way to a 6th place finish, with his 2 teammates Christian Eckes and Matt Crafton finishing behind him. Nevertheless here he is, the only 2022 driver champion looking to repeat this weekend. His 2022 stats are hard to make something out of as his 2022 ranks range from 1st to 9th. For his playoff stats it is easier to see he’s done either really good or not so good as he has 2 Top 2’s, but only 3 Top 10’s. At small tracks, Rhodes brings more of the same as he has a best finish of 2nd with 2 Top 5’s but only 3 Top 10’s in 5 races. When it comes to Phoenix however Rhodes’ stats are somewhat better. Last year Rhodes won the championship here finishing 3rd in the race and Top 5 in both stages. This was Rhodes best finish here though as he only has 1 Top 3 here, but does have 3 Top 5’s in 7 races. He also does well in stages here finishing in the Top 10 in 9 of his 10 stages. Based on the stats it’s hard to tell what to expect from Rhodes, but what I see is a Top 10 and at that maybe a Top 5 with an outside chance at the championship.

Outlook
Ty Majeski is on a hot streak. After Homestead he has now won 2 of the last 3 races and the one he didn’t win was Talladega where he had nothing to go for. Majeski this year has been solid as his 2022 ranks above are no worse than 5th and the 5th’s are in the stage categories. His playoffs have been even more impressive as he has 2 Wins, 3 Top 3’s, 5 Top 10’s and 66 Stage Points in 6 races. Majeski hasn’t been to shabby on small tracks either, even with a 32nd place finish he still has an 11.0 average finish. Besides that 32nd he also has a Win, 2 Top 5’s and 3 Top 10’s in his 5 races on these style tracks. Majeski didn’t race at Phoenix last year and only has 1 race here in which he finished 11th, so basically the only thing to go off of is his 2022 season. Taking this all in I see Majeski with a Top 10 and with his hot streak maybe a Top 5, but even with his streak I still don’t see him winning the championship.

Outlook
John Hunter Nemechek’s Homestead race was much like his 2021 Phoenix race last year, a blown tire early which ruins his chance at a championship. It is tough seeing him not in the Championship 4 since he is 1st thru 3rd in the 2022 ranks above in every category except Top 10’s. While the 2022 season as a whole was good for Nemechek, the same cannot be said for the playoffs. Nemechek had more Poles (3) in the playoffs than Top 5’s (2) and only has 3 Top 10’s in 6 starts. At small track stats this year, Nemechek has 1 Top 3, 2 Top 5’s, 3 Top 10’s and 4 Top 15’s in 5 starts. As I mentioned, last year did not go well for Nemechek at Phoenix even though he came back to get a Top 10. Overall here Nemechek has been hit or miss as he has 2 Top 2’s and 5 Top 10’s, but also finished outside the Top 20 3 times in his 8 starts. This weekend I see Nemechek proving he should be in the Championship 4 getting a Top 5 and to that point probably a Top 2 as well.

Outlook
Stewart Friesen finished 3rd at Homestead, but alas it was not enough to get him into the Championship 4. Looking at his 2022 ranks above it seems he really didn’t deserve to be anyway. Friesen is no better than 6th in any 2022 rank above except Top 5’s, where he is 4th. The playoffs show even more of why he didn’t make it, even though he has over 10 Stage Pts Per Race he only has 2 Top 5’s and 3 Top 10’s in 6 playoff races. If Friesen did make it he may have been a factor though as he has a 7.8 average finish, 2 Top 5’s, 3 Top 10’s and 5 Top 15’s in 5 small track races this year. It’s even more painful to see him not in the running when looking at his Phoenix stats. Last year, Friesen finished 2nd here and overall has a 6.33 average finish. He has also finished Top 5 in half his starts and only outside the Top 10 once in 6 starts. While he’s not in the Championship 4, I see Friesen running well this week getting a Top 5 mostly likely but a Top 10 for sure.

Outlook
Grant Enfinger came into Homestead needing to win and while he had a good run he ultimately ended up 14th. Enfinger’s 2022 ranks above definitely say he doesn’t belong in the Championship 4 anyway, he ranks no better than 6th in any of the categories. The playoffs have been Enfinger’s calling card this year as he performed very well accumulating 4 Top 5’s in the 6 playoffs races so far. Small tracks this year have been where Enfinger has shined as well as he has an average finish of 9th. To that point he has 1 Win, 3 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s on small tracks this year. Last year at Phoenix, Enfinger started near the back but ended up 9th in Stage 2 and 13th at the end of the race. This was a typical run here for him as he only has 2 Top 5’s and 2 Top 10’s in 5 races, but has only finished outside the Top 15 once. This weekend I see Enfinger getting another Top 15 and maybe Top 10 too, but nothing better than 5th.

Outlook
Corey Heim was still in the Truck Owners Championship until Homestead, where despite his 5th place finish the 51 KBM truck was eliminated. When looking at Heim’s 2022 ranks above it isn’t that impressive until you realize he didn’t run in 7 races this year. His playoffs stats tell what he can do when he is in races though as he has competed in all 6 playoff races and has a Top 10 in all but one of them. He also has a Top 5 in half of them which is pretty good. However the reason he is notable is for his performance on small tracks this year. Heim has an average finish of 5.25 with a Win, 3 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s in the 4 small track races he has competed in. Since he has never competed at Phoenix this is all we have to go off of, but if Phoenix follows the stats above I see good things from him this weekend. I see Heim getting a definite Top 10 and probably a Top 5, mixing it up with the championship contenders.
