Last week at Martinsville Noah Gragson got his 4th straight Top 5 and 9th straight Top 10, continuing his momentum heading into the championship race at Phoenix. Gragson’s had one of the best Xfinity seasons since 2016 as his stats are 2nd or 3rd in most Thru 32 ranks above. He’s been the best driver this year as he ranks 1st or 2nd in most 2022 ranks above as well. Gragson’s playoffs have been even more impressive as he has 2 Wins, 3 Top 2’s, 5 Top 5’s and 6 Top 10’s in the 6 playoff races. As far as small tracks go his average finish is 14.33, but that is misleading. He was disqualified at Loudon leading to him finishing 38th instead of 4th, but has a Win and 2 Top 5’s in the 2 other small track races. The news only gets worse for the competition as that win came at Phoenix in the spring. That was Gragson’s 2nd Top 2 here, but also only his 2nd Top 5. The good news is that his only time finishing outside the Top 15 was a DNF, meaning that if he stays on track he will get a Top 15. This weekend I see good things ahead for Gragson, a Top 5 and at that possibly winning the race and the Xfinity Series Championship.

Ty Gibbs pulled off one of the cheapest moves of the year last week, dumping his teammate to win at Martinsville. This does not take away from his incredible 2022 season though, Gibbs is the only driver that’s been close to Noah Gragson’s stats as he ranks 2nd or 3rd in every 2022 rank above. You could say Gibbs has been the best driver in the best playoffs as well with 1 Win, 3 Top 2’s, 5 Top 5’s, 6 Top 10’s and 72 Stage Pts (2nd only behind Austin Hill). He is also on quite the hot streak with 2 straight Top 2’s, 4 straight Top 5’s and 6 straight Top 10’s. The bad news is small tracks have not been Gibbs’ friend as he only has 1 Top 5 in the 3 races this year, but has done well in stages getting 5.83 Stage Pts Per Stage. At Phoenix in the spring Gibbs didn’t lead a lap, but did end up 6th at the end of the day. As this was only his 2nd start here there isn’t much to go off of, but he has never finished worse than 6th here. I think this trend continues this weekend (assuming he doesn’t get wrecked) and Gibbs comes home with a Top 5 and a close battle for the Xfinity Series title.

Justin Allgaier survived Martinsville after a furious battle with A.J. Allmendinger and then Ty Gibbs dumping Brandon Jones last week to make the Championship 4. When looking at Allgaier’s 2022 stats above he deserves the spot as he is 4th or better in every 2022 rank above except Poles. However, the playoffs have been a struggle for Allgaier as he only has 3 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s in 6 races. The good news is that the 4 Top 10’s have come in the last 4 races and we’re headed to a small track. Allgaier has been amazing on small tracks this year with a 4.33 average finish, 2 Top 5’s, 3 Top 10’s and 6.67 Stage Pts Per Stage in 3 races. His worst finish has been 10th, which unfortunately for Allgaier came here at Phoenix in the spring. This track though is a great one for him as in 24 races he has an 8.71 average finish, a Top 5 in 1/3rd of his races here and a Top 10 in 2/3rds of his race here. Oh, he also hasn’t finished outside the Top 10 in a stage here. This weekend I don’t see being any different as Allgaier finishes Top 10 in both stages and gets a Top 5 in the race with a good chance at the win and the Championship.

Josh Berry didn’t need to do much and he pretty much laid back at the end of Martinsville winding up 20th. With his win at Las Vegas Berry was already in the championship race though and his 2022 stats say it’s pretty deserving. Berry ranks 4th-6th in every 2022 rank above which shows he has had a solid season. His playoff stats don’t look great with only 2 Top 5’s in 6 races, but considering he kind of took the last 2 weeks off that’s not too bad. At small tracks if you throw out his wreck at Loudon his average finish is 2nd with a Win and worst of 3rd. That 3rd came at Phoenix this spring in a strong showing from Berry as he also finished in the Top 10 of both stages that day. That was only his second race here and considering his first he got wrecked out there is very little to go off of. With that said though based on his 2022 I see Berry coming out of Phoenix with a for sure Top 10, most likely a Top 5 and it being a close race between all 4 drivers to see who is the Xfinity Series Champion.

A.J. Allmendinger had a chance to make the Championship 4 last week until a cut tire blew his chances away. It is unfortunate Allmendinger is not in the Championship 4 when considering his 2022 ranks are between 1st and 3rd for most of them. His playoffs haven’t been that bad either as he has 2 Wins, 3 Top 3’s, 4 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s, but those 2 non-Top 10’s were in the last 3 races which is why he is not racing for a championship. He may not have won anyway though looking at his 2022 small track and overall Phoenix stats. At small tracks this year, Allmendinger has an average finish of 11th with a best of only 6th. At Phoenix in the spring Allmendinger finished either 7th or 8th in all 3 stages of the race. This is typical for him here as he only has 2 Top 10’s in 5 races, but he also has never finished outside the Top 15. This weekend for Allmendinger, I see just that a Top 15 for sure with a Top 10 most likely and Stage Points but no Top 5.

Austin Hill’s Martinsville race ended with a BANG, unfortunately that bang was to Myatt Snider’s face and not a spot in the Championship 4 though. Hill’s 2022 ranks above are mostly 5th or 6th showing he has had a solid season (about as solid as that punch haha), but just not quite enough to get into the Championship 4. When looking at his playoffs you see why. Despite having 4 Top 10’s and the most Stage Points with 74, Hill only has 1 Top 5 in the playoffs. When it comes to small tracks this year Hill hasn’t faired much better as he has only achieved 1 Top 10 in 3 races. Unfortunately for Hill that was not at Phoenix as he finished 17th here in the spring and as that is his only start here his overall Phoenix stats above are quite boring to look at it. Going off all this info though I see Hill having a Top 15 run this weekend and probably getting a Top 10 but definitely not a Top 5.

Daniel Hemric got his 3rd straight Top 10 at Martinsville last week which would have done good for getting him to the Championship 4 if he were still in the playoffs. Unfortunately he was not and looking at his 2022 stats you see why. His 2022 ranks are 9th or worse in all but 2 categories. In the playoffs Hemric only has 1 Top 10 and 41 Stage Points, which is another reason he was ousted in the 1st round. At small tracks Hemric hasn’t faired well either with only 1 Top 10 in the 3 races at these style tracks. That one Top 10 was here at Phoenix though and his Phoenix stats is why he is a notable. Hemric has finished in the Top 5 here in 1/3rd of his races and has either finished Top 10 or outside the Top 20 in every race he’s has here. Overall this year it’s been a rough year for the 2021 champion, but I see it ending with a few Stage Points this weekend and a Top 10 run for Hemric.

Brandon Jones 2022 stats say he doesn’t deserve to be in the Championship 4 as he ranks 6th or worse in every 2022 rank above, and Ty Gibbs made sure he didn’t get in by wrecking him on the last lap at Martinsville. The playoffs have also been a rough go for Jones as he hasn’t gotten a single Top 5 and only has 3 Top 10’s. At small tracks this year it’s been a bit of a struggle too as he only has 1 Top 5 and 2 Top 10’s in 3 races, but does has 5.33 Stage Pts Per Stage. At Phoenix in the spring Jones finished 2nd after leading 30 laps and finishing 3rd in both stages which reflect his overall stats here. Jones has an average finish of 10.85 and has finished Top 3 in almost a quarter of his races, but also finished Top 10 in less than half. If Jones were in the Championship 4 he’d been a threat most likely I feel, but alas he is not. With that said I see a Top 10 for Jones with potential for a Top 5 and mixing it up with the Championship 4 or Ty Gibbs at least.
