One of the bigger surprise announcements before the 2022 season started was the return of owner John Cohen to NASCAR. Cohen, who had previously fielded both Cup Series and Xfinity Series cars (under the Team Xtreme Racing and Xxxtreme Motorsports brands) returned to the track for the first time in years.

In February of 2022, it was announced that the brand new #44 Chevrolet would officially be hitting the track with veteran driver Greg Biffle behind the wheel. The team was hoping for a small piece of success, fielding cars built by Richard Childress Racing, and powered by Hendrick Motorsports. The team also marked a return to Cup Series competition for the first time since 2016 for Biffle.

The team, led veteran crew chief Jay Guy, was rumored to be a full-time effort, but only ran 5 races in the beginning part of the season. The team got off to a great start, with Biffle not only getting the #44 Grambling State Chevrolet into the Daytona 500 field, but also qualifying 28th. The teams speed would quickly come to an end though, as Biffle would fall out of the race for a period with mechanical issues, finishing 36th.

The team returned in Las Vegas, where Biffle would have a strong effort again, qualifying 26th. The team would be bitten by the mechanical gremlin again, falling out on lap 148 with fuel pump issues. The same issues would plague the team at Talladega in race 10, where the fuel pump would relegate the #44 Chevrolet to a 35th place finish.

Race 7 in Richmond also saw Biffle head behind the wall early, going out on lap 96 with suspension issues.

The highlight of the brief season for Biffle and team would come in race 5 on the newly redesigned Atlanta. While Biffle qualified 37th, he would earn the team their first Top 20 finish, coming home on the lead lap in 20th.

Biffle’s final numbers for the brief return schedule include 3 DNF’s in 5 starts, 1 lap led, and an average finish of 32.4

2023 Outlook: No plans have been announced as of yet. With this team being an open team, it is unclear if they will return in 2023.
