One of the bigger surprises of the 2022 Cup Series season was the arrival of The Money Team (or TMT Racing). The team, which is owned by boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr., had been in the rumor mill since late 2019 as coming to the Cup Series. Following several failed attempts to get the team off the ground, 2022 saw the team become a reality after such a long struggle.

Just mere weeks before the 2022 Daytona 500, TMT announced their official entry into the Cup Series with journeyman driver Kaz Grala as their debut driver. Grala was signed to drive the #50 Chevrolet sponsored by Pit Viper Sunglasses. Veteran crew chief Tony Eury, Jr. was also hired to head up the effort.

Grala performed decently in his 2022 run with TMT. Starting by racing his way into the Daytona 500 via the duels, Grala quickly proved he was a solid choice for the upstart team, qualifying 35th. Grala ran well during the race, cementing that the team was for real. On lap 40, Grala became one of the first of many loose wheel violators in 2022, but rallied to finish 26th by races end (completing 196 of 201 laps).

Grala would go on to run for the team at COTA, finishing on the lead lap in 25th, followed by the Coca-Cola 600 where he came home 23rd (but 13 laps down). This marked what would be the end of Grala’s Cup season, but Grala would go on to run 10 Xfinity Series races, along with a dozen Truck Series starts in 2022.

TMT Racing returned for the Charlotte ROVAL, this time with Indy Car driver Conor Daly and sponsor BitNile on board the #50 Chevrolet. Daly, who was making his Cup Series debut, qualified 39th and finished 34th.

2023 Outlook: As of this writing, nothing has been announced yet. Grala is unlikely to return as he has signed a full-time Xfinity Series deal for Sam Hunt Racing to drive the #26 Toyota. Daly’s status is also unknown.
