Outside The Track: Phoenix

We’ve almost made it to the end of the west coast swing! Soon NASCAR will be headed back to the east coast, but not before 1 last race. This weekend the traveling circus makes a stop in the capital of Arizona- Phoenix.
Interesting fact: Phoenix, AZ is the 5th largest city in America. Good luck with the traffic out there!
I’ve checked with friends and here is a short list of some activities to fill your time if you are in the area for the races this weekend.

1. Golfing Arizona has perfect weather this time of year and with almost 200 courses in the Phoenix area, there are plenty of tee times available for all! Doesn’t everyone want to feel like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson for a day?

2. Goodyear Ballpark Spring Training is in abundance in Phoenix right now and there is a ballpark just 15 minutes from the racetrack. Goodyear Ballpark is the spring training home of the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds and there is a game almost every day! This is a great family friendly option if you happen to be baseball fans as well. Tickets start at $10, free parking and the ballpark allows attendees to bring in an empty refillable water bottle to use at water filling stations. More info can be found here https://goodyearbp.com/

3. Taliesin West Now open to the public for tours, Taliesin West was the winter home and studio of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright from 1937 to 1959. Located in Scottsdale, it is not quite an hour from the racetrack. Just by looking at photos online, the home looks AMAZING! (I admit I’m not really into architecture that much- but the home looks very unique and definitely 1 of a kind.) There are multiple tour options and some sell out so make sure to check and get tickets in advance if you are interested! https://franklloydwright.org/

Now to the really important part- FOOD!

1. Little Miss BBQ This restaurant came up multiple times with friends. There are 2 locations, but I was told the University location will close early if they sell out. I would suggest going for lunch or ordering online for pickup so you know there will be plenty of food! https://littlemissbbq.com/

2. Danzeisen Dairy A local, family run dairy that has served Phoenix for multiple generations. They have a creamery store where you can grab a sweet treat- shakes, homemade ice cream or even a waffle topped with ice cream and toppings!

3. Stockyards Steakhouse Originally opened in 1947, this restaurant is not shy about what it serves- quality beef and lots of it! Pricey but totally worth it for the experience and high quality of food. If you want to save some money, go during the week for lunch.

4. Mexican! Phoenix is crawling with Mexican restaurants – from little hole in the wall places to mega restaurants. If you’re in the mood for south of the border food, you won’t have to drive far to satisfy your craving.
