Outside the Track: Dover

This weekend, NASCAR heads to one of my favorite tracks – Dover Motor Speedway. If you’ve never been, make plans to go next year! The concrete track puts on great races, the seats vibrate when the cars go by (super cool), and the fan zone outside has a ton of stuff. (The year my family went they had an RV show in the fan zone.)

Make sure to take a photo with Miles the Monster, monster impression style! I will also say that of all the racetracks I have been to, Dover had the fastest, most efficient traffic flow in and out of the property, and parking was a breeze.

ATTRACTIONS

Bally’s Dover Casino Resort
Behind the backstretch, this is a great option to fill your time before or after a race. Hopefully you will win instead of lose money in the casino! They also have multiple restaurants in the resort. If you want to stay in the hotel – book early! The rooms always sell out for race weekend, especially if you want a room that overlooks the track.

Air Mobility Command Museum
Located on the Dover Air Force base just minutes from the racetrack, this museum has aircraft and artifacts reflecting the history of Dover Air Force base in a restored WWII hanger. The highlight of the aircraft is the VC-9C which served as Air Force Two for Vice Presidents, transported several First Ladies, and was used as Air Force One when Presidents were flying into smaller airports. Admission and parking is free. The museum is open Wednesdays-Sundays. More info can be found at amcmuseum.org.

Beaches
The racetrack isn’t very far from the ocean and if you want a laid-back option for how to spend your time, hitting the beach is it! There are little beaches along the coast of Delaware but if you take Route 1 south out of Dover, in an hour you will hit the most popular, Rehoboth Beach. Plenty of sand, a boardwalk, numerous restaurants, and Tanger Outlets will greet you in this lively beach town.

RESTAURANTS

  • The Countrie Eatery
Right down the street from the track, this casual-style restaurant serves homestyle food from sunup to sundown. If you want a sit-down home-cooked breakfast, this is your place!
  • La Baguette Bakery and Catering
    T
his bakery is in downtown Dover near the courthouse. Made-from-scratch breakfast pastries and breads, quiches, salads, and specialty sandwiches along with cakes, pies, and tarts make up a bulk of the menu at this popular eatery.
