The All-Star race at North Wilkesboro brought feelings of nostalgia, and also a pretty boring race (not just for the lead) where Kyle Larson dominated en route to his 3rd All-Star race victory. This week we go to where the Next Gen car shines, an Intermediate track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I have picked 8 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on the 2023 point standings, 2 based on 2023 stats, 2 based on Intermediate track stats, 1 based on the last Charlotte race and 2 based on their overall Charlotte stats. Here is a look at those 8 notable drivers 2023 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2023 and ranking through 13 races since the Chase started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year, 2023 Intermediate track (1.3-1.5 miles) statistics and Charlotte statistics.

Ross Chastain is notable because of how well his stats are this year. Chastain had an uneventful All-Star race finishing 11th which is actually better than his Avg. Finish this year of 12.92, 7th best. In the 13 races this year he’s ran 76% of his laps in the Top 15 with a 94.01 Avg. Driver Rating. In terms of finishes he has 3 Top 3’s, 5 Top 5’s, 6 Top 10’s, and 1 DNF; but also 0 Wins. As far as stages go Chastain has been really good collecting 5 Stage Wins, 2nd most, 17 Stage Top 10’s, T1st most, and 116 Stage Pts, 2nd most. He’s also been good in stages at Intermediates this year as he has 5.17 Stage Pts Per Stage in the 3 races. In addition he’s ran 97% of his laps in the Top 15 and has the 6th best Avg. Driver Rating at 104.27. However, the finishes have been lacking as he has just a 15.33 Avg. Finish, only 1 Top 10, and 1 DNF. In the 2022 Charlotte race Chastain ran 92% of his laps in the Top 15, led 153 laps, got 26 Stage Pts, and was near the front at the end of the race. Christopher Bell is notable because he is 2nd in points thru 13 races. The All-Star race was a challenge for Bell as he ran most the race out of the Top 10, finishing 12th. This is not typical of Bell this year as he has a 12.69 Avg. Finish with 1 Win, 5 Top 5’s, and 8 Top 10’s. In terms of race pace success he has ran 75.73% of his laps in the Top 15, has a 90.91 Avg. Driver Rating, 16 Stage T10’s, and 73 Stage Pts; but also 0 Stage Wins. At Intermediates this year Bell has ran well as he’s ran 93.5% of his laps in the Top 15, has a 90.5 Avg. Driver Rating, and 4 Stage Pts Per Stage. However, like Chastain above, the finishes haven’t been there as he only has 1 Top 10 and also has 1 DNF, leading to an 18.33 Avg. Finish. The nice thing for Bell is that this week is Charlotte where he finished 5th last year and had the 5th best Driver Rating at 98.4. However, he only ran 64% of his laps in the Top 15 and he didn’t lead a single lap in the race. Still, this was Bell’s best finish here and his 2nd Top 10 in 4 races, with his other 2 ending up out of the Top 20. All told he has 14.75 Avg. Outlook
Denny Hamlin is notable because of his stats thru 13 races this year. Hamlin was a bit of a disappointment at the All-Star race ending up in 13th. This matches his season finishes as his 1 Win, 1 Top 3, 3 Top 5’s, and 5 Top 10’s are also a bit disappointing; but what’s not disappointing are his other stats. His 12.31 Avg. Some of this success has come in the 3 Intermediate races as Hamlin has an 8.0 Avg. Finish with 1 Win, a 107.27 Avg. Driver Rating, and 3.33 Stage Pts Per Stage. Unfortunately that win is his only Top 10, but his worst finish is also just 12th. At Charlotte last year Hamlin only led 15 laps and got 2 Stage Pts despite running 96% of his laps in the Top 15. Outlook
William Byron is notable because of how good he has done in the 3 Intermediate races this year. Last week Byron tried a green flag pit stop in the first half of the race that set him back all race ending in a 20th place finish, 2 laps down. When looking at Byron’s 2023 Ranks above, though, he’s been the best driver this year. As proof his 103.28 Avg. Driver Rating, 3 Wins, 2 Poles, 4 Top 3’s, 6 Top 5’s, 6 Stage Wins, 17 Stage T10’s, and 126 Stage Pts are all either 1st or T1st. In addition he’s ran 77.62% of his laps in the Top 15, T3rd best, and even with his 2 DNF’s he has the 8th best Avg. Finish at 13.31. This weekend Byron is looking to extend his 2 race Top 3, 3 race Top 5, and 4 race Top 10 streak; and when looking at his Intermediate stats this year he’s got a good chance to do that. In the 3 races he has 2 Wins, a 3rd, the best Avg. Driver Rating at 127.5, and 6 Stage Pts Per Stage. Furthermore he’s ran 84% of his laps in the Top 15, led 23.17% of his laps, and has won 2 of the 6 stages. In Charlotte last year Byron was involved in a wreck halfway through the race causing to finish 32nd with a 71.2 Driver Rating, but the good news is he ran 91% of his laps in the Top 15. This is unfortunately typical of Byron here as in 6 races he has 2 DNF’s, 2 Top 10’s, and a 19.33 Avg. Finish while he’s ran 85% of his laps in the Top 15. This weekend I see Byron running Top 15 most of his race and finishing either 3rd-7th or with a DNF.

Johnson has raced at Charlotte 37 times and in those races he has 8 Wins, 14 Top 3’s, and 22 Top 10’s. Furthermore he’s only finished outside the Top 20 9 times with 5 of those being DNF’s. It’s not all finishes either as he’s got the best active Avg. Driver Rating at 108.16, has ran 88.57% of his laps in the Top 15, and he’s led 15.08% of his laps as well. However, this was all in Hendrick equipment, now he’s in his own equipment which has been quite bad this year. So for that reason I see a lot of Johnson’s Charlotte stats being a lot worse after this weekend as I think he finishes somewhere between 20th and last.
