This week NASCAR heads to Kansas for only the 2nd Intermediate race of the year. Outlook
Ross Chastain is notable because of how good he’s run on Intermediate tracks since the start of 2022. Last week Chastain was up front all race and almost made 4 tires pay off at the end, but alas he ended up 2nd. As good as he’s been this year this was his best finish of the year, but was his 3rd Top 3 which is tied for the most this year. This race now has his Avg. Finish at 12.18, 3rd best, and his Avg. Driver Rating at 92.04, 4th best. In addition Chastain has 4 Top 5’s, 5 Top 10’s, and his 4 Stage Wins, 14 Stage T10’s, and 97 Stage Pts all rank 2nd best this year. These good stats are accompanied by good Intermediate stats as well. Since the beginning of 2022 Chastain’s 10.55 Avg. Finish is 2nd best at these tracks and his 106.74 Avg. Driver Rating is the best. In the 11 races he has 3 Top 3’s, 6 Top 10’s, and 9 Top 15’s, but also 0 Wins. However, there is more good news in that his only finish out of the Top 20 was a DNF, and he’s gotten 5.48 Stage Pts Per Stage in the 11 races. Last Fall at Kansas Chastain finished 7th after acquiring 4 Stage Pts, running 97.75% of his laps in the Top 15, and ended with the 7th best Driver Rating at 97.1. Christopher Bell is notable because of his 2023 stats. Last week Bell ran decent the whole race and got his series leading 8th Top 10, finishing 6th. Bell also leads the series in Top 5’s with 5, and is tied for the lead in Top 3’s with 3. In addition his 10.45 Avg. Finish is 2nd best, his 91.94 Avg. Driver Rating is 5th best, and his 13 Stage Top 10’s are tied for 4th best. The only bad news for Bell so far this year is that he has 0 Stage Wins and just 62 Stage Pts, 8th most, but other than that he’s been great. In fact he is on a 2 race Top 10 streak which could be continued this weekend when you see that his last 11 Intermediate races have resulted in 5 Top 5’s and 8 Top 10’s. In addition 2 of his 3 finishes non-Top 10’s were DNF’s, so if he can stay on track he’ll likely end up Top 10. All of this has his Avg. Finish at 11.45, 4th best, and his Avg. Kevin Harvick is notable because of how well he’s done at Kansas in his Cup Series career. At Dover Harvick ran most the race in the Top 15 but in the end finished 19th. This race now puts both his 13.73 Avg. Finish and 88.25 Avg. Driver Rating at 8th best this year, but he’s ran 75.38% of his laps in the Top 15 which is the 4th best percentage. His finishes, however, have been lacking as he has 0 Top 3’s, and just 3 Top 5’s, but he does have the 4th most Top 10’s with 5. Harvick does have the 5th most Stage Pts at 71 though. This stage success is not likely to continue based on his last 11 Intermediate races as he has less than 1 Stage Pt Per Stage in the 11 races. Outlook
Martin Truex Jr. is notable because of how well he’s done at Kansas in his 29 career starts. Last week Truex broke his long losing streak as he pulled out a win at Dover. This was only his 2nd Top 3, 2nd Top 5, and 4th Top 10 this year, but somehow he has the 4th best Avg. Finish at 12.27. Part of why his Avg. Finish is so good is that he’s ran all 2,981 laps this year, but only 68% of those laps have been in the Top 15 and his Avg. Driver Rating is 7th best at 88.83. In the last 11 Intermediate races Truex has a 14.45 Avg. Finish with just 1 Top 5, but he does have 6 Top 10’s with 3 of his 5 finishes out of the Top 15 being DNF’s. However, he has ran better than his finishes indicate as his 98.23 Avg. Driver Rating ranks 5th best, plus he’s ran 86% of his laps in the Top 15 with 2 Stage Wins and 4.7 Stage Pts Per Stage. The good news is the only Top 5 I spoke of was the Fall Kansas race where he led 9% of the race en route to a 5th place finish.
