Last week at Chicago was a surprisingly good race, and as a bonus we got to see something that hasn’t happened in 60 years as Shane Van Gisbergen won in his first NASCAR Cup start. This weekend we could see another surprise winner as we head to a Superspeedway, Atlanta. I have picked 8 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on the 2023 point standings, 2 based on 2023 stats, 2 based on Superspeedway stats, 1 based on the last Atlanta race and 2 based on their overall Atlanta stats. Outlook
Martin Truex Jr. is notable because he’s the points leader thru the first 18 races. The first 45 laps were great for Truex at Chicago as he ran up front, but the last 30 saw him spin multiple times and finish 32nd. This took Truex’s Avg. Finish from 1st best to 4th best at 12.06, but the good news is that 4th best is one of his worst ranks as all but one of the 2023 Ranks above are 5th or better. However, only one of them is 1st best, his 5 Top 3’s. In terms of stats he has a 97.51 Avg. Driver Rating, 2 Wins, 6 Top 5’s, 9 Top 10’s, 1 DNF, 24 Stage T10’s, and 131 Stage Pts this year. That’s the good news, but the bad news is Truex’s stats on Superspeedway’s this year. In the 3 races he has 1 Top 15 (15th at Daytona), a 20.33 Avg. Finish, 1 finish out of the Top 20, and 0 DNF’s. However, even with this Byron still has a 12.0 Avg. Finish (3rd best), and his 80.89 Laps in Top15%, 101.88 Avg. Driver Rating, 3 Wins, 5 Top 3’s, 7 Stage Wins, 25 Stage T10’s, and 179 Stage Pts all still rank 1st or T1st this year. The good news stops there, though, as the 3 Superspeedway races this year have been a struggle for Byron. In the 3 races he has 1 Top 10 (7th at Talladega), a 24.33 Avg. Finish, and a 74.13 Avg. Driver Rating; but he also has 2 DNF’s so maybe if he finishes then the numbers are better. Then again, he has only ran 59% of his laps in the Top 15 and has only led 0.17% of his laps as well. Ryan Blaney is notable because of how good his stats here at Atlanta are in his career. Chicago was bad for Blaney, how bad? Well, he was one of two drivers to not run a single lap in the Top 15 and he ended up finishing 33rd. The race worsened Blaney’s Avg Finish to 15.0 (11th best), his Laps in Top15% to 71.12 (9th best), and his Avg. Driver Rating to 84.38 (9th best).
