Outside the Track – Bristol Motor Speedway

Who else is ready for night racing at Bristol Motor Speedway? I personally have both hands raised! It’s going to be a great week in Bristol, Tennessee – sunny and the perfect temperature!

If you will be watching all the action from home, be sure to check out our social media accounts as a few of our staff members, myself included, will be in attendance. Be on the lookout for live content from the racetrack.

However, if you will join thousands of other fans in person this week, here are some suggestions for time-fillers during the day.

Attractions

  • For outdoor lovers, less than 15 minutes from the racetrack is Steele Creek Park. Covering over 2,200 acres with plenty of things to do, this is a great family option. There is a 52-acre lake, nature center, kids splash pad, playgrounds, numerous walking and biking trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course! There is a $2 fee per car at the gate, but you can bring your own food to have a picnic at one of the many shelters.
  • Head to The Pinnacle if you want to scratch your shopping itch. Right off I-81 before you cross into Virginia, this shopping center has over 50 stores, a movie theater, and plenty of restaurant options.  (Don’t tell me you men won’t shop – there is a Bass Pro Shops as well!)
  • For the history lover, head about an hour south to Greenville, TN to visit the home of Andrew Johnson, our 17th President. I visited the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site a couple of years ago and it was quite enlightening. You will learn his life story by going through the visitors center. President Johnson had a unique path to the White House – a true rags-to-riches story. Do not skip the short film about his impeachment and acquittal! Pick up a house ticket and head a few blocks over to tour the home he lived in with his family before and after his Washington, D.C. years. Drive a couple miles up the road and you can visit his grave atop a hill in the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. There is no fee to visit the Historic Site as it is owned and operated by the parks service.

Restaurants

Burger Bar
Located right downtown in Bristol, this no-frills, old-school diner serves burgers, sandwiches, salads, and milkshakes. Their claim to fame is being known as the last place Hank Williams, Sr. was seen alive!
The Mad Greek Restaurant
If you are in the mood to try some good Greek food, this is your place! There are a lot of Italian dishes on the menu as well.
Michael Waltrip Brewing Co.
This has pretty standard fare on the menu – appetizers, burgers, wings, and salads. It also features a good-sized beer list. There will be some live music there this week as well as race viewing parties. And you just might get a glimpse of Michael!
The Southern Churn
Check out this place on State Street for dessert. You can pick up fudge, roasted nuts, candy by the pound, or try a scoop or two of the over 25 ice cream flavors they have!
