Are you ready for some edge-of-your-seat action this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway? The Round of 12 is always the most stressful, and possibly the most entertaining, of the Playoffs. With a pack-style racetrack and a road course as two of the three races, we are probably going to have chaos this weekend.
Shout out to a friend of mine who lives in the area and is a Talladega Superspeedway regular attendee. I appreciate their help in putting together activities and restaurant suggestions for this weekend. If you are going to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and Cup Series races this weekend, have a great time!
Activities
For the outdoorsy types, drive through the Talladega National Forest. There are plenty of hiking trails and waterfalls to find throughout the forest. For a special treat visit Cheaha State Park on top of Cheaha Mountain within the forest. It is the highest point in Alabama and the views are fantastic. There is an observation tower, a playground area for kids, a hiking trail, a dog park, and plenty of areas to have a picnic.
Thirty minutes from the speedway in Anniston, AL is the Anniston Museum of Natural History where you can come face-to-face with prehistoric predators, go spelunking in a replica Alabama cave, stroll the African savanna, or visit Ptolemaic-era mummies. Located outside of the museum are gardens and nature trails. You can find out more about them here.
Are you a dirt fan or just looking for some more action? Check out the Talladega Short Track across the street from the speedway property. The Red Farmer Tribute Race weekend happens to be this weekend! There will be dirt races on Friday and Saturday nights. This is a great way to spend the evening and see all the local talent.Â
Restaurants
- Hubbard’s Off Main is located in historic downtown Oxford, AL, and came highly recommended. Whether you want shrimp and grits, a fancy steak, or country cooking, they have something for everyone on the menu. You might want to call or go online and make reservations ahead of time to cut down on your wait time for a table.
- Highway 77 Fish Market Restaurant is just minutes away from the speedway. Note that it is only open from Wednesdays through Saturdays. You can get all kinds of fresh, local fish and seafood in various forms. I was told the grilled catfish and seasoned crab legs are amazing.
- Ark Family Restaurant is found in Riverside, AL and the gumbo is highly recommended. If you want a seafood feast, try the seafood platter – it includes frog legs!
