Stenhouse and his #47 JTG-Daugherty Racing crew were entered their third full season together, and expectations were high. The new season started off with a bang in Daytona, as Stenhouse would score his third career victory in the Daytona 500, after starting 31st. Following Daytona, Stenhouse and crew reeled off a string of top 20 finishes before a 35th place finish in Richmond. By mid-season, the #47 entry was back frequently running towards the front with improved speed. These finishes included a 4th place on the Bristol dirt, as well as top 10 finishes at several tracks considered to be outside of the teams wheelhouse. These included top 10’s at Martinsville, Charlotte, Pocono, and Texas. The beginnings of playoff contention were showing, and the entire JTG-Daugherty crew had proved they were there to compete. Unfortunately, the up and down results in the later part of the season, quickly pushed the team to just outside of Round of 8 contention.
Stenhouse also showed the team had improved during the ’22-’23 off season, as he earned his best points finish since 2017 when he last won. As one of the few single-car teams in the Cup Series, Stenhouse’s 16th place in the final standings should be considered a success. The final numbers for 2023 include an average finish of 17.8, 1 win, 9 top 10 finishes, and 3 DNF’s.
2024 Outlook: With the team staying intact for 2024, this could be the season Stenhouse makes it into the Round of 8…but not without some work. In order for another playoff attempt to happen, Stenhouse and crew chief Mike Kelley will have to improve on consistency, as 2023 finishes were still a bit of a roller coaster. Look for the 47 car to be a threat at Daytona, Talladega, and Atlanta.
