Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: COTA

At Bristol last week we finally had tire wear! However, it was probably a little extreme. Neverthless it made for a great race and an exciting finish as Denny Hamlin maneuvered his way through traffic to hold off Martin Truex Jr. for the win. Next up is the first Road Course of the Cup Series season, COTA, where hopefully everyone has better manners than last year. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Road Course stats, 1 based on the last COTA race, 1 based on their Next Gen COTA stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 5 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at COTA, 2023 Road Course (left and right turns) statistics and COTA statistics in the Next Gen car.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Ryan Blaney (4 of 5), William Byron (4 in a row, 2nd week out)

1st in Points – Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson was one of the stronger cars last week at Bristol, but pit road hampered his race. This week he cannot afford issues as his stats are already not great at COTA. Photo by Meg Oliphant — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Larson is notable because he’s 1st in points thru 5 races
Last week Larson was able to run 86% of his laps in the Top 15, however after a mistake in the pits he had to run hard and save tires to end up finishing 5th
This year he’s been great in stages as he ranks 1st in every 2024 stage stat above except Stage T10’s, however he only has 2 Top 10’s in the first 5 races
This year he’s had a 2 straight Stage Wins streak and is currently on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
The only real streak he’s had at COTA is that he finished the first 3 stages here in the Top 10
He was decent on Road Courses in 2023 picking up a 12.17 Avg. Finish with 3 Top 10’s in 6 races, but he failed to lead any laps in those 6 races
At COTA last year Larson ran just 35% of his laps in the Top 15, but was able to find a way to finish there as he ended up 14th
He’s ran both Next Gen races that have been run at COTA finishing 14th and 29th with only running 44% of his laps being in the Top 15 and he’s led 0 laps
Outlook for this weekend
Kyle Larson may only have 2 Top 10’s in the first 5 races of the season, but he’s been so good in stages that he’s the points leader. Last week was one of those Top 10’s and when looking at his Road Course stats from last year his 3rd may have to wait until after this week as he was mediocre on them last year. What’s worse is that this week is COTA where he hasn’t performed well in the Next Gen car. So, based on the stats don’t count on Kyle Larson being one to contend for the win this weekend.

2nd in Points – Martin Truex Jr.

Martin Truex Jr. got his first Top 5 of the year, finishing 2nd at Bristol last week. He hopes to finish one spot better this week, but the stats say he won’t. Photo credit: Andy Coffee — PPN

Main Points & Outlook
Martin Truex Jr. is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 5 races
Last week Truex was one of the best drivers at making his tires last as he ran 88% of his laps in the Top 15 and got 9 Stage Pts en route to a 2nd place finish
This year he has the best Avg. Finish (8.6), 2nd best Avg. Stage Finish (7.0), and the most Stage T10’s (9), but last week was his 1st Top 5 of the year
He is currently on a 3 race Top 10 streak and an impressive 8 straight Stage T10 streak
He has no streaks at COTA above 1 in a row
In 6 Road Course races last year he had 1 Win, but only 1 Top 5 with 3 Top 10’s and just a 13.83 Avg. Finish
In the 2023 COTA race Truex ran 63% of his laps in the Top 15 and ended up with the 14th best Driver Rating, but he finished 17th in the race
He’s ran both Next Gen races at COTA and in the 2 races he’s ran 65% of his laps in the Top 15 and has the 10th best Avg. Driver Rating among active drivers, but his best finish is only 7th
Outlook for this weekend
Martin Truex Jr. may not have flashy stats this year, but he’s tied for the points lead and has been pretty consistent. Last week he almost picked up his first win and heading to a Road Course this weekend could continue his good start to the year. On these tracks last year he had decent runs and decent finishes, but he’s struggled a bit in the Next Gen car here at COTA. Overall expect Truex to be good this weekend, but based on the stats I’d stop short of saying he’ll be a contender for the win.

7th in Points – Ross Chastain

Ross Chastain screwed himself last week by starting dead last, if he wants to continue his success at COTA then he can’t start that bad this weekend. Photo by Jonathan Bachman — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Ross Chastain is notable because of how well he’s ran at COTA in the 2 Next Gen races here
Chastain had a terrible qualifying effort last week at Bristol as he started dead last causing him to run just 26% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to a 15th place finish
He has the 3rd best Avg. Finish this year (10.6), but he has a 16.4 Avg. Stage Finish and has only ran 40% of the laps this year in the Top 15
In terms of streaks this year he had a 3 race Top 10 streak coming into Bristol
His streaks at COTA are much better as he is on a 3 straight Top 5 streak in the only 3 races competed here
Road Courses as a whole weren’t great to him in 2023 as he ran just 38% of his laps in the Top 15 with the 16th best Avg. Driver Rating and only 3 Top 10’s
Chastain’s best Road Course finish last year came at COTA where he ran 85% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 4th
In the 2 Next Gen races at COTA he’s ran 92% of his laps in the Top 15, led 22% of his laps, and has a win with a worst finish of 4th
Outlook for this weekend
Ross Chastain may have 3 Top 10’s this year but sometimes good finishes can be deceiving as he hasn’t ran particularly good this year. This may not get any better when you look at his Road Course stats from last year. In the 6 Road Course races he had some good finishes but overall ran pretty poor. However, this is COTA where Chastain has been amazing in the Next Gen car, both running and finishing great. The stats overall are a little kerfuffled, but with this being COTA it seems a great run and finish are in store for Chastain this weekend.

9th in Points – Tyler Reddick

Main Points & Outlook
Tyler Reddick is notable because he dominated the 2023 COTA race
An early wreck at Bristol hampered Reddick as he ran just 6 laps in the Top 15 last week en route to a terrible 35.0 Driver Rating and a 30th place finish
He’s done well in stage this year being tied for the 3rd most Stage Pts, but he has the 10th best Avg. Stage Finish (15.9) and has finished over half of the 5 races this year out of the Top 20
In terms of streaks this year he’s had a 2 race Top 10 streak and a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
He is on a 1 race Win “streak and 1 straight Stage Win “streak” at COTA in addition to being on an impressive 3 race Top 10 streak here
In the 6 Road Course races last year he had 1 Win, 4 Top 10’s, the 2nd best Avg. Driver Rating, and ran 81% of his laps in the Top 15
Reddick dominated at COTA last year leading 55% of the race, winning Stage 2, and running 93% of the race in the Top 15 en route to winning the race
In the 2 Next Gen races at COTA he’s finished 5th and 1st with his 95.14 Laps in Top 15%, 128.65 Avg. Driver Rating, and 29.86 Laps Led% all ranking 1st among active drivers
Outlook for this weekend
Tyler Reddick was just awful last week at Bristol and on the year he’s struggled to find good finishes. That, however, may change this weekend as we head to a Road Course where he was pretty good last year. What’s even better news for Reddick is that this weekend is COTA where he dominated last year and has done great in the 2 Next Gen races here. Overall based on the stats look out for Reddick to not only be a contender in the race this weekend, but perhaps be the guy to beat as he could dominate the race.

31st in Points – Shane Van Gisbergen

Outlook for this weekend
Shane Van Gisbergen has barely any stats to speak of above as he has only ran in 2 Cup races in his entire life. However, the 2 races he ran were at Road Courses last year and he was very impressive in them, even winning one of them. So, even though he has limited stats don’t count SVG out this weekend as he could be a contender for the win if the stats hold true.
