Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Las Vegas

Atlanta has seen many great finishes in it’s history and last week added to the list as Daniel Suarez was able to nose ahead of Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch in an incredible three wide photo finish. This week we go to the first non-drafting track of 2024 where might not see such a cool finish, but it will still be good racing as we head to Las Vegas. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Intermediate stats, 1 based on the last Las Vegas race, 1 based on their Next Gen Las Vegas stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 2 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Las Vegas, 2023 Intermediate (1.3-1.5 miles) statistics and Las Vegas statistics in the Next Gen car.

1st in Points – Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch (#8) came oh so close to picking up the victory at Atlanta last week, but he did leave with the points lead. This week he heads home where he has ran well and hopes to get his first victory of the season. Photo by Alex Slitz — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Busch is notable because of his stats thru 2 races this year
At Atlanta last week Busch only ran 64% of his laps in the Top 15, but he did lead 11% of the race and was close to victory but ended up 3rd
He has the 3rd best Avg. Finish this year (7.5), the 2nd best Avg. Driver Rating (98.5), and his worst 2024 Rank above is just T7th (0 Stage Pts)
The only notable streak he’s had this year is his 3 straight Stage T10’s he had to start the year
His Las Vegas streaks are a lot more impressive as he’s had 2 straight Poles, 4 straight Top 5’s, 5 straight Top 10’s, and 5 straight Stage T10’s at some point in his Las Vegas cup career
He was mid-pack on Intermediates last year as he had the 12th best Avg. Finish and Avg. Driver Rating with just 1 Top 5 finish, but 5 Top 10’s in 10 races
Busch’s 1 Top 5 on an Intermediate came last Fall at Las Vegas where he ran all but 2 laps in the Top 15 and ended up with a 3rd place finish
In the Next Gen car at Las Vegas he has the 2nd best Avg. Finish among active drivers, 3 Top 5’s, and a worst finish of only 14th with 6 Stage T10’s in 8 stages
Outlook for this weekend
Kyle Busch was so so close to winning the 2nd race of the year for the 2nd year in a row. Nevertheless he came out of Atlanta with the points lead and some decent 2024 stats to start the year. Heading to an Intermediate isn’t exactly a welcome sight for this team as they weren’t great last year, but this is Las Vegas where Busch has been fantastic in his career and in the Next Gen getting 3 Top 5’s in 4 Next Gen races. All in all the stats say to keep Busch on your radar this weekend for a good run and potential Top 5 finish.

2nd in Points – William Byron

Main Points & Outlook
William Byron is notable because of how he performed on Intermediate tracks last year
Atlanta went very different than Daytona for Byron as he ran less than half the race in the Top 15 and ended up finishing 17th
Thru 2 races in 2024 he has only the 17th best Laps in Top 15% and 11th best Avg. Driver Rating, but he does have the 5th best Avg. Finish and 7th best Avg. Stage Finish
The only streak he has this year is 3 straight Stage T10’s to begin the year
His Las Vegas streaks are better as he is on a 2 straight race Top 10 streak and an 8 straight Stage T10 streak
He was an absolute beast on Intermediate tracks last year as he had the best Avg. Finish (4.4), 2nd best Avg. Driver Rating (112.13), and had 9 Top 10’s in 10 races
At Las Vegas last Fall Byron ran all 267 laps in the Top 15, had the 4th best Driver Rating, and finished 7th in the race
Since the introduction of the Next Gen car he has a 6.5 Avg. Finish at Las Vegas in 4 races with 2 Top 5’s, 3 Top 10’s, and 8 Stage T10’s in 8 stages
Outlook for this weekend
William Byron didn’t back up his Daytona 500 momentum with a good run at Atlanta, but he still holds the 5th best Avg. Finish this year. The good news for him is that his week is the first Intermediate race where he was just fantastic last year and by far the best driver on this style of track. Even better is that this weekend is Las Vegas where he’s been perfect in stages in the Next Gen car and has 3 Top 10’s in the 4 races. Overall if this year is anything like last year pencil Byron in for a Top 10 and high finishing Top 10 at that.

3rd in Points – Austin Cindric

Austin Cindric has been good at Superspeedways in his Cup career and last week was no different. Now he’s hoping to change how he’s done at Intermediates and have a good run at Las Vegas. Photo by Todd Kirkland — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Austin Cindric is notable because he’s 3rd in points
Cindric ran 90% of his laps in the Top 15 last week at Atlanta and was the first driver to finish behind the epic three wide photo finish, finishing 4th
His 2024 stats aren’t too bad as all but his 99.78 Completed Laps% and 1 Finish out of Top 20 rank better than 10th, in fact his 80.65 Laps in Top 15% is best this year
He doesn’t have any streaks this year over 1 in a row
At Las Vegas the only streak he has to speak of is his 2 straight Stage T10’s in the 2022 Fall race
In 10 Intermediate races last year he was terrible running only 15% of his laps in the Top 15, getting just 2 Top 15’s, and 0 Stage Pts
At Las Vegas last Fall Cindric ran just 4 laps in the Top 15 en route to a 23rd place finish
He’s ran all 4 Next Gen races at Las Vegas and in those races has more finishes out of the Top 20 (2) than Top 15’s (1) while only running 35% of his laps in the Top 15
Outlook for this weekend
Austin Cindric sits 3rd in points mostly thanks to his stages this year as he is tied for the 3rd best Avg. Stage Finish and has only the 6th best Avg. Finish in races. Unfortunately it only gets worse for Cindric as this week is an Intermediate where he was pretty bad last year, and in the 4 Next Gen races at Las Vegas he’s not done too well either. In other words this weekend might be different than the rest of 2024 has been so far for Cindric and far more of a struggle.

8th in Points – Ross Chastain

Ross Chastain didn’t have the greatest of days at Atlanta, but he still came home with a Top 10. This week we head to a track he’s been really good at and could definitely get another Top 10 finish. Photo by Jeffrey Vest — Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Ross Chastain is notable because of his stats at Las Vegas in the Next Gen car
Chastain only ran 55% of his laps in the Top 15 at Atlanta and was the highest finishing driver to lead 0 laps, finishing 7th
His stats this year aren’t great as he has the 13th best Laps in Top 15%, 17th best Avg. Drive Rating, and only tied for 10th best Avg. Finish
Like Cindric above Chastain has been 1 and done in terms of streaks this year
His streaks at Las Vegas are better as he has had 2 straight Top 3’s in his career here and 3 straight Stage T10’s
Last year in the 10 Intermediate races he performed well picking up 1 Win, 5 Top 5’s, and the 7th best Avg. Driver Rating (93.76) and Avg. Finish (12.5)
In the last Las Vegas Cup race Chastain led 0 laps, but he did finish 2nd in Stage 2 and 5th in the race
Since the introduction of the Next Gen he has been really good at Las Vegas as his worst finish is 12th and he holds the best Avg. Finish of any active driver (5.5) with the 2nd best Avg. Driver Rating (113.28)
Outlook for this weekend
Ross Chastain hasn’t started out the 2024 season the way he would have liked as he’s not run too well, but he does have 1 Top 10. The good news for him is that an Intermediate track is up next and last year he ran well on this style and finished half the races in the Top 5. More good news is that this week is Las Vegas where he has ran fantastic since the Next Gen came along. Based on the stats this weekend should be different than the first two races with a good run and result for Chastain.

11th in Points – Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson got in a wreck at Atlanta last week, I know, shocking. This week we are finally away from the Superspeedways and for Larson that means chances of winning are going up starting this weekend. Photo by Jeff Robinson — Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Larson is notable because of how he ran last Fall at Las Vegas
Last week Larson ran 87% of his laps in the Top 15, but he only ran 222 laps as an unfortunate wreck caused him to have a 32nd place DNF
With the first two races of the year being Superspeedways it’s not shocking his 2024 stats aren’t great thus far, but he does have the best Avg. Stage Finish (6.0)
Despite his bad stats he is on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
His streaks at Las Vegas are mighty impressive as he’s on a 2 race Top 2 streak, a 4 straight Stage T10 streak, and in his career has had 3 straight Top 3 finishes here
At Intermediates in 2023 he had the best Laps in Top 15% and Avg. Driver Rating, but he had more DNF’s (3) than Wins (2) which hurt his Avg. Finish. However, he did pick up 5 Stage Wins
Larson statistically dominated the last Las Vegas race as he had the best Driver Rating, won both stages, ran all but 1 lap in the Top 15, and won the race
In the 4 Next Gen Las Vegas races he has 3 Top 2 finishes with his only non-Top 2 being a DNF. He’s also led 25% of his laps in the 4 races and has 6.88 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
It’s no shock that Kyle Larson’s 2024 season has gotten off to a bad start as his luck on Superspeedways is non-existent. The good news for him is that this weekend is an Intermediate track (finally) and he was the best driver on them in terms of runs last year, however his finishes weren’t as great due to his high number of DNF’s. This is the same when looking at his Next Gen Las Vegas stats as he’s been fantastic when he isn’t getting a DNF. All in all Larson will be one to reckon with this weekend if he can keep his car on the track.
