Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Dover

At Talladega last week fuel saving was prevalent, Toyota’s wrecked each other, Ford’s blew another shot at a win, and Tyler Reddick ended up in victory lane. This week we head to Dover, where the race will probably not be as chaotic as Talladega but where drivers will race all out, all race. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Small track stats, 1 based on the last Dover race, 1 based on their Next Gen Dover stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 10 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Dover, 2024 Small track (1.0-1.3 miles) statistics and Dover statistics in the Next Gen car.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Denny Hamlin (4 in a row)

1st in Points – Kyle Larson

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Larson is notable because he’s 1st in points after Talladega
Larson had to start out Talladega going down pit road after a pre-qualifying adjustment, but in the race he ran 43% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 21st
Thru 10 races he has a 12.7 Avg. Finish and just 4 Top 10’s, but he’s tied for most Top 5’s (4) and Stage T10’s (13) and has the most Stage Wins (5) and best Avg. Stage Finish (8.55)
In terms of streaks this year he had 3 straight Poles going into Talladega and at one point had 2 straight Top 3 finishes this year
From 2014-2016 he had a 4 race Top 10 streak at Dover and twice has had a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
In the last 6 Small track races he has a 10.0 Avg. Finish with 4 Top 5’s, 1 Stage Win, and only 1 finish out of the Top 15
That one bad finish came at Dover last year where Larson was involved in an early wreck and ended up running just 19% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to a 32nd place finish
In 2 Next Gen races at Dover he has finishes of 6th and 32nd while running less than half his laps in the Top 15 and getting just 1 Stage T10 in 4 stages
Outlook for this weekend
Kyle Larson had an uphill climb last week after not being able to qualify at Talladega and was only able to climb up to 21st at the finish. Overall he’s had a very good 2024 season, but can’t find a way to put finishes together as he’s finished over half the races out of the Top 10. The good news for him is that this week is a Small track where he’s finished over half of the last 6 races in the Top 5. However, this is Dover where the stats say he hasn’t ran well in the Next Gen car. All in all expect a decent run from Larson this weekend, but a good finish is anything but a guarantee.

2nd in Points – Martin Truex Jr.

Main Points & Outlook
Martin Truex Jr. is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 10 races
At Talladega last week Truex led 16 laps, but he ran just 49% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to an 11th place finish
Thru 10 races he only has 2 Top 5’s, but he has 5 Top 10’s, is tied for the best Avg. Finish, and has the 2nd best Avg. Stage Finish
The only streaks he has this year is his 5 straight Top 10 finish streak and 8 straight Stage T10 streak earlier this year
At Dover he once had a 4 race Top 2 finish streak in 2019-2020, and he is currently on a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
Since the start of 2023 he has 5 Top 10’s in 6 Small track races with 2 Wins, the best Avg. Finish (6.17), and 4.42 Stage Pts Per Stage
Last year at Dover Truex ran 90% of his laps in the Top 15 and had just the 4th best Driver Rating, but he led 17% of the race and ended up in victory lane
In the 2 Dover Next Gen races he’s finished 12th and 1st, but he’s ran 88% of his laps in the Top 15 and has gotten a Stage T10 in all 4 stages
Outlook for this weekend
Martin Truex Jr. almost squeaked out his 6th Top 10 of the year at Talladega last week, but he just missed. Overall he’s been very consistent this year and has some of the best in-race stats of any driver. The news only gets better for him as this week we head to a Small track where he’s won 2 of the last 6 races and has the best Avg. Finish in those races. What’s even better you ask, well this is Dover where Truex led 68 of the final 69 laps last year to win. Based on these stats watch out for Truex this weekend to finish well and potentially get his first win of the year.

4th in Points – William Byron

Main Points & Outlook
William Byron is notable because of how he ran last year at Dover
At Talladega last week Byron ran just 47% of his laps in the Top 15, but he was able to finish 3rd in Stage 1 and 7th in the race
His 10.0 Avg. Finish, 3 Wins, 3 Top 2’s, 4 Top 3’s, 4 Top 5’s, 7 Top 10’s, and 15 Playoff Pts all either rank 1st or T1st this year, but he has just the 8th most Stage Pts and 8th best Avg. Stage Finish
He is currently on a 5 race Top 10 finish streak and earlier this year he had a 2 race Top 3 streak
He is on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak at Dover and in 2020-2021 had a 2 race Top 5 finish streak
In the 6 Small track races since the start of 2023 he has 4 Top 10’s and 1 Win to just 1 finish out of the Top 20 with 3 Stage Wins and the 2nd best Avg. Driver Rating
At Dover last year Byron led 48% of the race and got 19 Stage Pts while he ran all but 1 lap in the Top 15, but he struggled late and finished 4th
He’s finished 22nd and 4th in the 2 Next Gen races at Dover and in the races has ran 76% of his laps in the Top 15 while getting 5.75 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
William Byron is tied for longest active Top 10 streak with Tyler Reddick at 5 and on the year he ranks 1st in many of the 2024 stats above. This may get even better this weekend as he’s ran very well on Small tracks since the start of 2023 and he’s been great in stages at them as well. What’s more is that this week is Dover where he was great last year, until he fell off late, and his stats are respectable in the 2 Next Gen races ran here. Overall expect Byron to run great in the first 2 stages this weekend, but he may fall off late. Still, he’ll most likely get a good finish.

7th in Points – Ryan Blaney

Ryan Blaney narrowly avoided his day ending early at Talladega, but he still didn’t run or finish well. He’s hoping Dover will be better, especially since he finished 3rd here last year. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Ryan Blaney is notable because of how well he’s done on Small tracks since the start of 2023
Last week Blaney ran just 29% of his laps in the Top 15 at Talladega and only got 7 Stage Pts en route to a disappointing 20th place finish
In 10 races this year he has just a 14.5 Avg. Finish with 4 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s, but he does have the 2nd most Stage Pts and the 5th best Avg. Stage Finish (12.55)
In the early part of the season he had a 2 race Top 3 streak and a 3 race Top 5 streak
He is currently on a 3 straight Stage T10 streak here at Dover and in 2019 finished all 4 stages in the Top 10
Since 2023 he’s ran in all 6 Small track races accumulating the 2nd best Avg. Finish, best Laps in Top 15%, and best Avg. Driver Rating; but he has 0 Wins
3’s were wild for Blaney last year at Dover as he started 3rd, finished 3rd in Stage 1 and 2, had the 3rd best Driver Rating, and finished 3rd in the race
He’s ran both races in the Next Gen car at Dover with finishes of 26th and 3rd, a 94.6 Avg. Driver Rating, and 6.5 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
Ryan Blaney started the season off really good, but he’s cooled off since and not even Talladega could help get his season back on track. The one thing he has going for him right now is he’s been pretty good in stages. However, there is better news on the horizon as this weekend is a Small track where he’s been great over the last year+, but he hasn’t been able to win. Moreover he was able to be the 3rd best driver at Dover last year and overall in the Next Gen at Dover he’s ran decent. Overall, based on the stats look for Blaney to do well, but a win probably isn’t in the cards this weekend.

9th in Points – Ross Chastain

Main Points & Outlook
Ross Chastain is notable because of his stats in the 2 Next Gen races at Dover
At Talladega Chastain was able to get 6 Stage Pts and he ran 63% of his race in the Top 15, but he ended up finishing 13th
On the year he has just 1 Top 5 and 4 Top 10’s with only 41 Stage Pts, but he has the 7th best Avg. Finish (13.4) and 7th best Avg. Stage Finish (13.3)
He hasn’t finished back-to-back stages in the Top 10 this year and the only streak he has is a 3 race Top 10 streak earlier this year
His streaks are better at Dover as he’s currently on a 2 race Top 3 streak and a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
Since the start of 2023 he has a 13.0 Avg. Finish with 1 Win, but only 3 Top 15’s and 3 Finishes out of the Top 20 in 6 races
Chastain won Stage 2 at Dover last year and ran all but 6 laps in the Top 15 en route to the best Driver Rating in the race and a 2nd place finish
In the 2 Next Gen races at Dover he has finishes of 3rd and 2nd with an impressive 98.88 Laps in Top 15% and 7.0 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
Ross Chastain has gotten off to a bit of slow start this year in terms of great finishes, but his consistency has him 9th in points and with decent Avg. Finishes. This weekend may help his stats out as he’s been great in half of the Small track races since the start of 2023, but he’s also been pretty bad in the other half of those races. However, this is Dover where he’s ran amazing and had great finishes in the Next Gen, but no wins and also controversy in both races. Overall, expect a great day for Chastain this weekend with hopefully no controversy.
