Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: All-Star Race

In the last Cup race at Darlington we saw some good racing, but also questionable racing, and heartache for Chris Buescher yet again. Thankfully this time his teammate/owner Brad Keselowski was able to take advantage and pick up Ford’s first win in NASCAR this year. Up next we head to a race where points don’t matter and we’re sure to see something different, the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Short track stats, 1 based on the last All-Star race, 1 based on their Next Gen All-Star stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 13 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at the All-Star Race, 2024 Short track(under 1 mile) statistics and All-Star Race statistics in the Next Gen car.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Kyle Larson (4 in a row, 2nd week)

2nd in Points – Martin Truex Jr.

This picture looks good for Truex, but after this was when his race went downhill after contact with Byron and Blaney. Truex hopes to avoid carnage this weekend and pick up his first All-Star Win. Photo by Jeffrey Vest — Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Martin Truex Jr. is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 13 races
Truex had a typical Next Gen Darlington day for him as he was in the Top 5 when he was caught up in a wreck causing him to run just 43% of his laps in the Top 15 and finish 25th
For the year he has a 10.15 Avg. Finish with a 9.73 Avg. Stage Finish, and he has the 3rd best Laps in Top 15% in the 2024 Ranks above with the 3rd best Avg. Driver Rating as well
This year he’s had a 2 race Top 5 streak, 5 race Top 10 streak, and an 8 straight Stage T10 streak
The only streak he’s had in the All-Star Race is a 2 race Top 10 streak from 2019 to 2020
In the 3 Short track races this year he has 2 Top 5’s, the 3rd best Avg. Driver Rating (111.57), a Stage Win, and a 5.67 Avg. Stage Finish
In the 2023 All-Star Race Truex started 12th, led 0 laps, and finished the race 14th one lap down
He’s ran in both Next Gen All-Star races and in the races he’s finished 14th both times without leading a single lap
Outlook for this weekend
Martin Truex Jr. had another tough day at Darlington last week, but coming into the All-Star break he is 2nd in points with the 2nd best Avg. Finish and 3rd best Avg. Stage Finish. A good bit of his success this year has come on Short tracks where he’s ran very well and has finished good in 2 of the 3 races. However, this is the All-Star Race where he’s finished 14th in the last 2 races and hasn’t impressed much. Overall, based on the Short track stats from this year if Truex can get a good starting spot he could very much be a contender for the win this weekend.

3rd in Points – Denny Hamlin

Denny Hamlin wasn’t spectacular at Darlington, but he did come away with his 3rd straight Top 5. This weekend he hopes to do even better and win his 2nd All-Star Race. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Denny Hamlin is notable because of his 2024 Short track stats
At Darlington Hamlin got just 3 Stage Pts and led just 1 lap, but he did run 98% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to a 4th place finish
In 2024 he has the best Laps in Top 15% of laps run this year despite being T11th in Completed Laps%, and most of his 2024 stats above are 2nd or better
He is currently on a 3 race Top 5 streak, the longest current streak in the Cup Series
From 2013 to 2018 he had a stretch of 6 straight Top 10 finishes in the All-Star Race
At Short tracks this year he has a 4.33 Avg. Finish with 2 Wins, the best Avg. Driver Rating (121.37), and the best Laps in Top 15% (94.33)
Last year in the All-Star Race Hamlin started 9th and finished 13th one lap down, without leading a lap
In his 2 Next Gen All-Star races he has a 2nd and 13th place finish, but he is yet to lead a lap
Outlook for this weekend
Denny Hamlin has been on quite the roll of late as Darlington gave him his 3rd straight Top 5 finish and his 5th Top 5 on the year. What’s even better is he’s been really good in stages too, but the best news of all is that this week is a Short track. In these races this year he’s ran amazing and finished with 2 Wins in the 3 races. However, last year he wasn’t great here, but 2 years ago in the All-Star Race he was able to pull out a 2nd place finish. All in all, when you look at the stats above it’s hard to not see Hamlin as one of the few favorites to win this weekend.

4th in Points – Chase Elliott

Chase Elliott struggled at Darlington last week, but he still hasn’t finished out of the Top 20 this year. This weekend he looks to have a better run than last week and become 1 million dollars richer. Photo by Jeffrey Vest — Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Chase Elliott is notable because he is 4th in points heading into the All-Star Race
Elliott had a very subpar day at Darlington as he ran just 17% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 12th
He has the best Avg. Finish this year (9.85), and is the only driver with 6+ starts in the Cup Series this year to neither finish out of the Top 20 or have a DNF
When it comes to streaks this year he is tied for the longest Top 3 and Top 5 streak with the longest Stage T10 streak this year at 9 straight stages
He is on a 1 race Top 5 “streak” in the All-Star Race, and in the late mid 2010’s he had 3 straight Top 10’s in the All-Star Race
At Short tracks this year he has the 3rd best Avg. Finish, the 4th best Avg. Driver Rating, and is one of two drivers to finish all 3 races in the Top 10; but he has just a 10.67 Avg. Stage Finish
In last years All-Star Race Elliott started 13th, but he moved himself up to 5th by the end of the race
In the 2 Next Gen All-Star races he has a Top 5 finish and a 23rd place DNF
Outlook for this weekend
Chase Elliott had a very rough day at Darlington almost getting lapped in Stage 1, but despite this he has still yet to get a DNF or finish out of the Top 20 this year. Up next is a Short track where he has performed admirably in terms of finishes, but in stages he hasn’t done well. Thankfully for Elliott this is the All-Star Race where he won’t have to worry about stages and where last year he finished 5th. In all, when looking at the stats it wouldn’t be surprising to see Elliott near the front at the finish, but if he’s up front during the race much, that’d be the surprise.

6th in Points – Tyler Reddick

Tyler Reddick had a good battle with half of the RFK organization, but the other half he raced dumb with. If he can avoid dumb moves and race like he did in last years All-Star Race he might be the winner this weekend. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Tyler Reddick is notable because he has the best Next Gen All-Star Race Avg. Finish
Reddick had the car to beat at Darlington as he got 17 Stage Pts, including a Stage 2 win, and led 60% of the race; but another questionable Darlington move caused him to crash and finish 32nd
He’s been good in stages this year as he has the 5th best Avg. Stage Finish (11.65), but his 4 finishes out of the Top 20 have his Avg. Finish at 10th best (14.69)
He is currently on a 3 straight Stage T10 streak and at one point this year had a 5 race Top 10 finish streak
The only streak he has had in the All-Star Race is a 1 straight Top 3 finish “streak” that he is currently on
Short tracks have been a struggle for him this year as he’s ran just 49% of his laps in the Top 15 and has the 20th best Avg. Driver Rating, but he does have 2 Top 10 finishes
Reddick was good in the 2023 All-Star Race as he was able to finish 3rd after starting in 20th place
This was his only Next Gen All-Star Race and thus he has very good stats in the All-Star Race with this car
Outlook for this weekend
If Tyler Reddick had been more patient last week he might be a two-time winner this year, but instead he wrecked himself and Chris Buescher out of a Darlington win. This was his 4th finish out of the Top 20 this year and what’s worse is that this weekend is a Short track. He’s struggled to run well in the 3 Short track races this year, but he does have 2 Top 10’s. In more positive news this week is the All-Star Race where in his only Next Gen start he was able to drive through the field and finish 3rd. Overall, it’s hard to tell what to expect from Reddick this weekend, but it seems either expect a bad run with a good finish or good run with a bad finish.

16th in Points – Bubba Wallace

Bubba Wallace wasn’t great at Darlington last week, but he did get another Top 10. This week he hopes to run well like he did last year here and race his way into the All-Star Race. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Bubba Wallace is notable because of the fact he finished 2nd in last years All-Star Race
At Darlington Wallace got 3 Stage Pts, ran 93% of his laps in the Top 15, and finished 7th
He has just a best finish of 4th this year and only has 5 Top 10’s with a 17.00 Avg. Finish, but he does have the 8th most Stage T10’s this year (13)
On the year his longest Top 5/10 streak is the same as his longest DNF streak (2 races), but he is currently on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
The only All-Star Race streak he has is a 1 race Top 2 “streak” that he is currently on
He has just 1 Top 5 (a 4th) in the 3 Short track races this year, but he has the 3rd best Laps in Top 15% and 5.33 Stage Pts Per Stage
Last year Wallace ran well in the All-Star Race as he came from 10th place at the start to finish 2nd
This was his 2nd Next Gen All-Star Race and in the two races he has a 9.0 Avg. Finish with 0 laps led
Outlook for this weekend
Bubba Wallace now has more Top 10’s than finishes out of the Top 20 after Darlington, but overall he’s not been able to finish well in races. What’s worse is that he is in the Open race this weekend and isn’t even guaranteed to be in the All-Star Race. However, there is good news in the fact that he’s ran well on Short tracks this year, but unfortunately for him he hasn’t been able to finish them well. More good news is that in last years All-Star Race Wallace was able to finish 2nd. Based on the stats if Wallace can make it into the All-Star Race he could be a good sleeper pick for a Top 5 finish.
