Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Charlotte

Last week at North Wilkesboro Ricky Stenhouse punched his ticket…. wait, no he just punched Kyle Busch. However, this was the most noteworthy thing as the race itself was pretty bad to watch, but in the end it was Joey Logano who led 199 of 200 laps to become this years All-Star winner. Next up we head to Charlotte and since this is an Intermediate that means it will be a good race since this is the Next Gen’s bread and butter. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Intermediate stats, 1 based on the last Charlotte race, 1 based on their Next Gen Charlotte stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 13 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Charlotte, 2024 Intermediate (1.3-1.5 miles) statistics and Charlotte statistics in the Next Gen car.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Chase Elliott (4 of 5) and Martin Truex Jr. (4 in a row)

1st in Points – Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson stepped off the chopper last week and into a 4th place finish in the All-Star Race. This week he’ll be doing a helluva lot of flying again doing the double that he hopes ends in 1100 miles ran. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Larson is notable because of his stats in the 4 Intermediate races this year
Larson started shotgun on the field in the All-Star Race last week, but a different pit call on the last caution was able to get him a 4th place finish
He ranks 1st in 8 of the 17 2024 Ranks above including his 5 Top 3’s, 6 Top 5’s, 7 Stage Wins, and 7.23 Avg. Stage Finish; but he also has 4 finishes out of the Top 20
This year he’s had 3 straight Poles and 2 straight Top 2 finishes, but his longest Top 10 streak is also just 2 races long
His Charlotte streaks aren’t much better as he has just a 2 race Top 10 streak here as well and a long Stage T10 streak of just 4 stages
In the 4 Intermediate races this year he has just a 14.25 Avg. Finish, but he has a 120.75 Avg. Driver Rating and 2 Wins with 4 Stage Wins
At Charlotte last year Larson ran 81% of his laps in the Top 15, but he only got 7 Stage Pts and crashed out to finish 30th
He hasn’t faired well in the 2 Next Gen Charlotte races as he has finishes of 9th and 30th with an 86.85 Avg. Driver Rating and just 3 Stage T10’s
Outlook for this weekend
Kyle Larson has been an absolute beast in stages this year, but unfortunately his 7 Stage Wins are more than how many Top 10’s he has (6) as he’s struggled to finish races off. The same can be said about his Intermediate races this year as he’s ran well but also has 2 Wins with 2 finishes out of the Top 20. However, there is worse news in the fact that he hasn’t ran great at Charlotte in the Next Gen car and his finishes have been bad as well. Overall, expect Larson this weekend to run well, but don’t put any money on him getting a good finish to reflect that run.

3rd in Points – Denny Hamlin

Main Points & Outlook
Denny Hamlin is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 13 races
In the All-Star Race Hamlin ran just inside the Top 10 for the first half of the race, but the second half went much better as he worked his way up to finish 2nd
On the year he has a 12.69 Avg. Finish with just 6 Top 10’s, but he has the best Avg. Driver Rating (104.07), 3 Wins, and the most Playoff Pts (18)
He is currently on a 3 race Top 5 finish streak and earlier this year he’s had a few 4 straight Stage T10’s streaks
He has had a few 3 race Top 5 finish streaks here at Charlotte and in the early 2010’s had a 7 race Top 10 finish streak here
On Intermediates this year he has 0 Top 3’s and an 11.75 Avg. Finish in 4 races, but he does have 3 Top 10’s with 1 Stage Win and a 5.88 Avg. Stage Finish
Hamlin ran 97% of his laps in the Top 15 at Charlotte last year and led 20 laps, but a wreck with Chase Elliott caused him to DNF in 35th place
He has finishes of 1st and 35th in the 2 Next Gen races at Charlotte with just 3 Stage T10’s, but he has ran over 96% of his laps in the 2 races in the Top 15
Outlook for this weekend
Denny Hamlin was one spot shy of his 2nd career All-Star victory last week at North Wilkesboro. Overall this year he’s ran well in most races, but he hasn’t always been able to get the finishes to show it. However, these type of races haven’t been on Intermediates as he’s ran and finished well in 3 of the 4 races this year. The stats get even more jumbled up when looking at his Next Gen Charlotte stats as he’s ran well but has finished great in one race and DNF’d the other. This weekend it’s clear that Hamlin will run well, and if he can avoid carnage expect a good finish as well.

5th in Points – William Byron

William Byron has finished 2 of the last 3 points races out of the Top 20. He hopes that he can get a good finish this weekend and finish one spot better than he did here last year. Photo by Jared C. Tilton — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
William Byron is notable because he’s 5th in points heading into Charlotte
In the All-Star Race Byron started 13th and midway through the first stage hit the wall causing him to pit. He never recovered and finished 19th (out of 20)
In 2024 he has 3 Wins and 4 Top 5’s, but also 3 finishes out of the Top 20. In addition, he’s not done well in stages getting just 66 Stage Pts this year
He is on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak and this year he’s had a 2 race Top 3 streak with a 5 race Top 5 streak
At Charlotte his only notable streaks are his active 1 race Top 2 finish streak and his 3 straight Stage T10 streak
He hasn’t ran great at Intermediates this year as he has a 14.0 Avg. Stage Finish and only the 6th best Laps in Top 15%, but he has 3 Top 10’s and the 3rd best Avg. Finish (10.5)
In the Charlotte race last year Byron led 23% of the race, and got 20 Stage Pts while running all but 4 laps in the Top 15 en route to a 2nd place finish
His 2 Next Gen races at Charlotte are like those of his counterparts above as he has 1 DNF and 1 good finish, but he’s ran well and has 1 Stage Win
Outlook for this weekend
William Byron hasn’t exactly been making a case for best driver this year as he’s done well at finishing races in 2024, but his overall races haven’t been great as he’s especially struggled in stages. The same can be said about him in the 4 Intermediate races as he has good finishes but also just 1.13 Stage Pts Per Stage. The good news for him is that this weekend is Charlotte where he’s ran great in the 2 Next Gen races and came home with a 2nd place finish last year. Based on the stats, do not expect much from Byron this weekend until Stage 4 where he probably ends up with a Top 10.

6th in Points – Tyler Reddick

Main Points & Outlook
Tyler Reddick is notable because of his stats in the 2 Next Gen races at Charlotte
In the All-Star Race Reddick started 6th and ran decent most of the race ending the final 30 laps of the race running 14th
Only 3 of his 2024 Ranks above are 10th or worse (99.17 Completed Laps%, 14.69 Avg. Finish, 4 Finishes out of the Top 20)
He is currently on a 3 straight Stage T10 streak and this year he’s had a 5 race Top 10 finish streak
At Charlotte he is on a 3 race Top 10 finish streak and before Stage 2 last year he was on a 7 straight Stage T10 streak
In the 4 Intermediate races this year he’s ran 93% of his laps in the Top 15 and has the 2nd best Avg. Driver Rating, but he has just 2 Top 15’s with 1 finish out of the Top 20
In the 2023 Charlotte race Reddick ran 97% of his laps in the Top 15, led 7% of the race, and finished the race in 5th
He has finishes of 5th and 6th in the 2 Next Gen Charlotte races while having the best Avg. Driver Rating (115.3) and getting 5.83 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
Tyler Reddick didn’t have the best of All-Star races last week, but overall his stats this year have been good except for the fact he has as many finishes in the Top 5 as out of the Top 20 (4). The good news, somewhat, is that this week is an Intermediate race where Reddick has ran tremendous at this year, but he hasn’t always had the best finishes. The best news is that this is Charlotte where he’s ran well in the Next Gen car and even better he’s finished well in the races too. In all, watch out for Reddick to be a contender this weekend, and if he can avoid dumb moves could even wind up in victory lane.

8th in Points – Ryan Blaney

Main Points & Outlook
Ryan Blaney is notable because of how he ran in the Coca-Cola 600 last year
Blaney started 17th in the All-Star Race last week, but he ended up in the Top 5 for most of the day and finished 5th
The 2023 Cup champion started the year off great, but has cooled off as he only has 2 Top 10’s in the last 9 Cup races and overall has a 15.38 Avg. Finish this year
The only streaks he has this year are a 2 race Top 3 streak, 3 race Top 5 streak, and a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
His Charlotte streaks are a bit better as he is currently on a 1 race Win “streak”, a 1 straight Stage Win “streak”, and a 3 straight Stage T10 streak
He’s struggled on Intermediates this year as he’s ran just 61% of his laps in the Top 15, has just 1 Top 10 to 2 finishes out of the Top 20, and has a 21.0 Avg. Finish
Last year Blaney was great in the Coca-Cola 600 as he ran all but 4 laps in the Top 15, got 24 Stage Pts, and won the race with a 144.9 Driver Rating
In the 2 Next Gen races at Charlotte he’s finished 1st and 29th while running 93% of his laps in the Top 15 and leading 28% of his laps
Outlook for this weekend
Ryan Blaney hasn’t been great this year, but he’s been able to get enough Stage Pts this year to have him sitting 8th in points thru 13 races. However, this week is an Intermediate track where Blaney hasn’t ran great this year and has finished even worse as he is tied for 27th best Avg. Finish in the 4 races. Then again, this is Charlotte where he dominated last year and has ran well in both Next Gen races. Overall, based on the stats don’t expect a day like Blaney had last year, but also don’t expect him to be awful either probably finishing near or in the Top 10.
