After another exciting race this past weekend at Darlington Raceway, we have the fun All-Star Race weekend to look forward to! There are multiple days of action on track at North Wilkesboro Speedway, so if you are in attendance there will be plenty of racing to watch.
The All-Star Race is something a bunch of fans look forward to every year. As a teenager, my dad and I would have our annual Concord race weekend. We would go down for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and the All-Star Race. We always had tickets near the start/finish line and I looked forward to drivers introductions so much.
Watching my driver, Carl Edwards, win in 2011 is my #1 racing memory so far. I won’t be in attendance this weekend but I have my fingers crossed for great racing.
Attractions
- An hour from the racetrack is the little town of Mt. Airy where you can live out a few hours of Mayberry. Stop by and see Andy Griffith’s homeplace, stroll down mainstreet and pretend you are Opie, or you can visit the replica Mayberry jail and courthouse (unfortunately you can’t leave your loved ones locked up).
- Just 40 minutes from the track is Stone Mountain State Park. The park is home to a 600-foot granite dome that is a designated National Natural Landmark and the historic Hutchinson Homestead, a restored mid-19th-century farm situated at the mountain base.
You can hike and search for waterfalls, fish, saddle up on horseback or rock climb at Stone Mountain.
- For the kids, check out The Block in downtown Wilkesboro.
There is an arcade, skating rink, trampoline park, ninja course and much more for all ages. It’s a great option to let the kids get all the energy out!
Restaurants
- Shortstops Burgers and Shakes near downtown Wilkesboro is the perfect place to pick up breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The fried tenderloin biscuit comes recommended for breakfast and you can’t go wrong with any of their burgers for lunch or dinner. If you want a sweet treat, they have over 20 different milkshake flavors!
- Cagney’s Kitchen is a great option if you want a sit down restaurant with a wide range of food options. It’s a good place if you want homestyle cooking. They have daily specials along with their expansive menu. I was told you can’t go wrong with anything you order here.
- Finally, if you are craving Italian, try Amalfi’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria. I was told they have fantastic pasta dishes.
