Xfinity Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Portland

The last Xfinity race (Charlotte) saw a lot of strategy, some good racing, some temper tantrum racing, and Chase Elliott ending up in Xfinity Series victory lane for the first time since 2016. Next we go to a race where no Cup drivers will be racing, and a place where temper tantrums were prevalent last year, Portland. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Road Course stats, 1 based on the last Portland race, 1 based on their Portland stats over the last 5 Xfinity seasons, and 1 based on the highest in 2024 points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 12 races since the Playoffs started in 2016. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Portland, 2024 Road Course track (left and right turns) statistics and Portland statistics from the past 5 Xfinity seasons.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Xfinity outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Xfinity outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Jesse Love (4 of 5) & Chandler Smith (4 in a row)

2nd in Points – Cole Custer

Last week Cole Custer’s impressive 9 race Top 10 streak came to an end at the hand of Austin Hill. He hopes to start a new streak this weekend at Portland, where he won last year. Photo by Logan Riely — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Cole Custer is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 12 races
At Charlotte last week Custer ran 79% of his laps in the Top 15 and got just 1 Stage Pt, then he was senselessly wrecked late in the race by Austin Hill to DNF in 32nd place
This was his 1st DNF and finish out of the Top 20 this year, but he’s still ran the best % of the laps this year in the Top 15 and has the 2nd best Avg. Finish with the 2nd best Avg. Stage Finish
Going into last week he was on a 9 race Top 10 finish streak and at one point this year he was on an 11 straight Stage T10 streak
At Portland he has a 1 race Win “streak”, a 1 straight Stage Win “streak”, and a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
In the last 9 Road Course races he’s ran 80% of his laps in the Top 15, has 3 Stage Wins, 2 race Wins, and 7 Top 10 finishes
At Portland last year Custer started 2nd and ran 95% of his laps in the Top 15, but he led just 5 laps en route to him winning the race
This is his only Xfinity race here at Portland and thus the only stats to add are that he got 7 Stage Pts Per Stage and had a 117.6 Avg. Driver Rating
Outlook for this weekend
Cole Custer got wrecked last week to get his 1st DNF and finish out of the Top 20 this year. However, he still has some of the best stats on the year, even without a win. With this being a Road Course hat win could come this weekend though as he’s gotten 2 Wins in the last 9 Road Course races, and he’s ran well in the races he hasn’t won as well. Even better is that one of those wins came at Portland last year in his only start at the track. All in all when looking at the stats count Custer as one of the favorites to pull of the win, or at least get a good finish this weekend.

3rd in Points – Austin Hill

Last week Austin Hill became one step closer to being the absolute NASCAR villain. He’ll look to get his 3rd win of the year this weekend at Portland, by apparently any means necessary. Photo by Jared C. Tilton — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Austin Hill is notable because of his stats at Portland in the 2 Xfinity races held here
Hill ran 79% of his laps at Charlotte in the Top 15 and got 12 Stage Pts, but he led 0 laps and got into a scuffle on track with Cole Custer to finish 25th (and lose 25 points)
Thru 12 races this year he is tied for most Wins (2), Top 5’s (6), Stage T10’s (19), and has the most Top 2’s (4) with the best Avg. Stage Finish (7.4)
This year he is tied for or has the longest Win streak (2 races), Top 2 streak (2 races), Top 5 streak (5 races), and he has the longest active Stage T10 streak (10 stages)
At Portland he is currently on a 2 race Top 5 streak and a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
He has a 9.67 Avg. Finish in the last 9 Road Course races with 5 Top 5’s, a 100.46 Avg. Driver Rating, and his only finish out of the Top 15 is a DNF
Last year Hill got 9 Stage Pts and ran all 77 laps in the Top 15 at Portland, but he led 0 laps en route to his 5th place finish
In the 2 Portland Xfinity races he has a 114.55 Avg. Driver Rating, a 4.0 Avg. Finish, and he’s ran 94% of his laps in the Top 15; but he’s yet to lead a lap
Outlook for this weekend
Austin Hill is quickly becoming (or has become in some eyes) the villain of the Xfinity Series after his intentional wreck of Cole Custer last week. However, his 2024 stats speak to how good of a racer he is as he’s ran and finished well all year long. His stats may improve this weekend as we head to a Road Course where he’s ran great and finished well in the last 9 races. Even better is that this weekend is Portland were he’s picked up 2 Top 5’s in the 2 races here, but he’s yet to lead a lap. Overall, expect a solid run from Hill this weekend, and if he can avoid ticking anyone off, a solid finish as well.

4th in Points – Justin Allgaier

If I had a nickel for every time Justin Allgaier wrecked out while in the lead near the end of a race in 2024, I’d have 2 nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. He hopes that doesn’t happen this weekend at Portland. Photo by Jared C. Tilton — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Justin Allgaier is notable because he’s 4th in points after Charlotte
At Charlotte Allgaier led 40 laps, ran 90% of his laps in the Top 15, and won both stages; but a late wreck while in the lead caused him to DNF in 33rd
His 2024 season can be summed up in a few stats 16.33 Avg. Finish, 8.25 Avg. Stage Finish, 1 Win, 3 DNF’s, and 8 Stage Wins (most ever thru 12 Xfinity races)
He doesn’t have much in terms of streaks but he is currently riding a 6 straight Stage T10 streak and a 4 straight Stage Win streak that is tied for longest in Xfinity Series history
At Portland he is on a 2 race Top 5 streak and a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
He’s ran 91% of his laps in the Top 15 in the last 9 Road Course races and led 14% of his laps, but he has 0 Wins, 4 Top 5’s, and only 5 Top 10’s
In the 2023 Portland race Allgaier led 30% of the race, finished 3rd in both stages, and ran every lap in the Top 15 en route to a runner-up finish
In the 2 races run at Portland he has finishes of 2nd and 5th with a 110.2 Avg. Driver Rating, 4 Stage T10’s, and he’s led 15% of his laps here
Outlook for this weekend
Justin Allgaier has been the stage king this year as he’s got more Stage Wins than any driver thru 12 races in Xfinity Series history (8), but he keeps finding ways to finish bad at the end of races. The same can be said about his recent history at Road Courses as he’s done great in stages, but not at finishing races. Thankfully for him, this weekend is Portland where he has Top 5’s in both races held here in addition to good runs. One thing is clear this weekend, Allgaier will run well and be near the front in the stages, but a good finish is anything but a guarantee.

6th in Points – A.J. Allmendinger

Main Points & Outlook
A.J. Allmendinger is notable because of his stats at Road Courses since the start of 2023
Last week Allmendinger only ran 54% of his laps in the top 15 and got just 6 Stage Pts, but he was able to come on strong late for a 5th place finish
This was just his 2nd Top 5 of the year, but he does have 6 Top 10’s, the 6th best Avg. Finish (14.67), and a 10.29 Avg. Stage Finish
The only streak he has this year is a 6 straight Stage T10 streak earlier this year
His streaks at Portland are all one and done
He’s ran 5 Xfinity Road Course races since the start of 2023 and in them has 3 Poles, 3 Top 3’s, and a 126.98 Avg. Driver Rating; but he has just 1 Win
Allmendinger did not race in the 2023 Xfinity Portland race
In his only race at Portland he won the race, but he ran just 53% of his laps in the Top 15 and led just 8% of his laps
Outlook for this weekend
A.J. Allmendinger hasn’t had the welcome back to the Xfinity Series he thought he would as his 5th place finish last week was just his 2nd Top 5 of the year. However, he hasn’t been awful and this week we head to a Road Course where he’s been very good in the Xfinity Series since the start of 2023. Then again, this is Portland where Allmendinger was less than impressive in his only start, but he was still able to win. All in all, this is a Road Course so obviously Allmendinger will be a key player, but based on the stats don’t pencil him in as the winner just yet.

Main Points & Outlook
Sheldon Creed is notable because of how well he ran in the 2023 Portland race
At Charlotte Creed ran 91% of his laps in the Top 15 and led 9 laps, but a little over halfway through the race his oil cooler failed causing him to DNF in 36th
In 2024 he has a 15.17 Avg. Finish and a 13.92 Avg. Stage Finish with 7 Top 10’s, but he also has 4 finishes out of the Top 20 and only 10 Stage T10’s
This year he has a 3 race Top 10 streak and just a long Stage T10 streak of 4 stages
He is on a 1 straight Top 10 streak and 3 straight Stage T10 streak here at Portland
In the last 9 Road Course races he has just 1 Top 5 finish, but he has 5 Top 10’s and 2 Stage Wins while running 80% of his laps in the Top 15
Creed was great at Portland last year as he led 61% of the laps, won Stage 1, ran every lap in the Top 15, and had the best Driver Rating; but he only mustered up a 7th place finish
In the 2 Portland races he has a 7th place finish and a 32nd place DNF, but he’s ran 98% of his laps in the Top 15 and has finished in the Top 10 in 3 of the 4 stages
Outlook for this weekend
Sheldon Creed hasn’t had the type of season some expected him to have at JGR, but he hasn’t been bad. Well, in stages he’s been pretty bad, and that’s why he’s 8th in points. Heading to a Road Course isn’t exactly the greatest news, but it’s not bad either as he’s been good at finishing in the Top 10 on these tracks but not so much in the Top 5. However, this is Portland where he should have had a better finish last year as he absolutely dominated the race. Based on the stats expect Creed to have a good run this weekend and finish in the Top 10 if nothing goes wrong.
