Outside the Track: Iowa

It’s setting up to be a historic weekend at Iowa Speedway! Check out the things to do and places to eat outside the track! (Photo Credit: Iowa Speedway | Facebook)
After an action-packed weekend of racing in California, NASCAR is headed to the land of corn! Iowa Speedway is a fun short track that will host its first NASCAR Cup Series race this weekend. In the past, the Speedway has put on many fantastic NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races, so I have high hopes for some great racing racing on Saturday and Sunday.
This weekend should be a fun weekend for those in attendance. Iowa Speedway is less than an hour from Des Moines, the capital city of Iowa, which gives plenty of options of things to do and see.

ATTRACTIONS

  • Adventureland Amusement Park and Adventure Bay Waterpark are great options for those with kids. The amusement park has over 100 rides, shows, and attractions including a brand new underground wooden roller coaster.

I love amusement parks, so this is right up my alley for something to do leading up to race weekend.

  • Want to learn more about Iowa and the people who made the state what it is today? Check out the Living History Farms, an interactive 500 acre open air museum which takes visitors through historical time periods spanning 300 years. You will learn how Iowans transformed the fertile prairies of the Midwest into the most productive farmland in the world.
  • If air conditioning and less walking is more your speed, visit the Iowa State Capitol building in downtown Des Moines. The Capitol’s golden dome has stood as the symbol of Iowa government and politics since its completion in 1886.

Inside the Capitol building you will find intricate stone carvings and marble work, as well as an extensive art collection. The impressive multi story building and surrounding grounds are open to visitors Monday- Saturday for self-guided tours. If you have a small group, you can call ahead and set up a guided tour.

RESTAURANTS

  • Minutes from the racetrack is Montana Mike’s Steakhouse. I was told they have good steaks and burgers. If you want something with a little heat, try the Louisiana Pasta.

  • Now and Later Restaurant in Des Moines serves traditional homestyle American and Italian food. They are open for lunch and dinner.
  • Finally, Eatery A is located near downtown Des Moines and offers a Mediterranean menu along with wood-fired pizzas. The lamb sliders came highly recommended.
