Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Chicago

Last week at Nashville was something. It was a fairly good race up until the end where drivers either lost fuel pressure or lost their minds as we went 5 overtimes to see Joey Logano save a ridiculous amount of fuel and pick up the win. Now we head to Chicago where we will probably be something again, but will that be good or bad? That remains to be seen. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Road Course stats, 1 based on the last Chicago race, 1 based on their Next Gen Chicago stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 19 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Chicago, 2024 Road Course (left & right turns) statistics and Chicago statistics in the Next Gen car.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Martin Truex Jr. (4 in a row) & Chase Elliott (4 of 5)

1st in Points – Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson tried to get payback on Denny Hamlin last week and failed. This week if he focuses just on driving then he may find himself in victory lane. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Larson is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 19 races
At Nashville Larson got 15 Stage Pts and ran 91% of his laps in the Top 15, but in the overtimes his payback went awry and he ran out of fuel at one point but he still found a way to finish 8th
He has the 2nd best Avg. Finish this year and has the best/most Avg. Driver Rating, Poles, Top 2’s, Top 5’s, Stage Pts, and Avg. Stage Finish in the 2024 Ranks above
His longest Pole streak this year (3 races) is longer than his longest Top 10 streak (2 races) which he is currently on
He is currently on a 1 straight Top 5 finish “streak” and a 2 straight Stage T10 streak here at Chicago
In the 2 Road Course races this year he’s finished 1st and 17th while running just 73% of his laps in the Top 15 and getting just 2 Stage Pts Per Stage
At Chicago last year Larson led 0 laps, but he did get 13 Stage Pts, ran 97% of his laps in the Top 15, and finished 4th
With this being the only Chicago Cup race the only stats to add are that he had the 3rd best Driver Rating at 112.5
Outlook for this weekend
Kyle Larson showed last week why he doesn’t drive for payback, he’s not good at it. However, he still ended up with his 10th Top 10 of the year and still lead most of the 2024 stage categories, although those may take a dip this weekend since he hasn’t been great in stages on Road Courses this year. In fact, even his finishes have been a mixed bag in the Road Course races this year. Then again, this is Chicago where he ran great last year and came home with an impressive Top 5 finish. All in all, don’t expect greatness from Larson this weekend in the race, but don’t be surprised if he’s near the front at the finish.

3rd in Points – Denny Hamlin

If it wasn’t for Austin Cindric we’d be talking about Denny Hamlin picking up his 4th win of the year last week. However, he’ll have to wait for that 4th win, and it probably won’t come this weekend either. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Denny Hamlin is notable because he’s 3rd in points heading to Chicago
Hamlin got 16 Stage Pts at Nashville, ran 99% of his laps in the Top 15, led 21% of his laps, and was in position to win until Austin Cindric spun causing chaos that ended in a 12th place finish for Hamlin
He has the best Laps in Top 15%, tied most Wins, and tied most Stage T10’s in the 2024 Ranks above, but he also has 8 Top 10’s to 6 finishes out of the Top 20
He is currently on a personal season long 5 straight Stage T10 streak and at one point this year had a 5 race Top 5 finish streak
At Chicago he has no streaks
In the 2 Road Course races this year he’s ran just 50% of his laps in the Top 15 with a 14th place finish and a DNF, but he does have 1 Stage Win
Hamlin won the Pole for the Chicago race last year, but he failed to lead any laps, ran 77% of his laps in the Top 15, and finished 11th in the race
With this being the only Chicago Cup race the only stats to add are that he got 0 Stage T10’s last year and had an 85.3 Avg. Driver Rating
Outlook for this weekend
Denny Hamlin nearly got his 4th win of the year last week at Nashville, but Austin Cindric and fuel had other plans as Hamlin has now finished 4 straight races out of the Top 10. However, he’s ran great this year, but this week is a Road Course where he’s not ran too well and has a best finish of just 14th in the 2 races. More so-so news is that this weekend is Chicago where despite winning the Pole last year Hamlin led 0 laps and got 0 Stage T10’s en route to an 11th place finish. Overall, expect a good qualifying day from Hamlin this weekend, but in the race don’t expect too much from him.

5th in Points – Tyler Reddick

Tyler Reddick was this close to his 2nd win of the year and his 3rd Top 2 finish of the year. However, with this weekend being a Road Couse the chances of him picking up those stats this weekend are high. Photo by Jeff Robinson — Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Tyler Reddick is notable because of his stats in the 2 Road Course races this year
Reddick finished 3rd and 2nd in the first 2 stages last week at Nashville and ran 97% of his laps in the Top 15, but last lap blocks from Joey Logano kept Reddick from winning as he ended up 3rd
His worse 2024 Rank above is only T7th (3 Top 3’s) and he has the 3rd best Avg. Finish this year (12.53) with the most Top 10’s in Cup this year (12)
He is currently on a 2 race Top 10 finish streak and a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
The only streak he has at Chicago is a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
He’s finished 5th and 8th in the 2 Road Course races this year while running 90% of his laps in the Top 15 and having the best Avg. Driver Rating (108.2)
Last year at Chicago Reddick got 17 Stage Pts and ran 73% of his laps in the Top 15, but he got stuck in the tire barrier late in the race to drop him to 28th at the finish
With this being the only Chicago Cup race the only stats to add are that he led 8 laps and had the 5th best Driver Rating (101.5)
Outlook for this weekend
Tyler Reddick was so close to getting his 2nd win of the year last week at Nashville, but he fell just short. However, his stats this year are still among the best overall and he’s even got the most Top 10 finishes this year. Even better is that we head to a Road Course this weekend where he’s ran great this year and has finished no worse than 8th in the 2 races. What’s more is that this is Chicago where Reddick ran well last year, but didn’t get the finish to show for it. In all, keep an eye on Reddick this weekend as he’ll most likely be one to reckon with for the win.

23rd in Points – Michael McDowell

We’ve seen a trio of drivers have a terrible 2024 season overall, but win a race this year. Michael McDowell is hoping to add his name to that list this weekend at Chicago. Photo by Jeff Robinson — Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Michael McDowell is notable because of his career stats at Chicago (1 race)
Last week at Nashville McDowell led 13% of his laps and ran 40% of his laps in the Top 15, but a transmission issue caused him to DNF in 35th place
He has 3 times as many Poles (3) as Top 5 finishes (1) this year and he has as many DNF’s as Top 10 finishes (5). In fact, his 5 DNF’s are tied most this year
The only notable streaks he has this year aren’t that good as he’s had a 2 race Top 10 streak this year, but he’s also had a 3 race DNF streak as well
At Chicago he currently rides a 1 race Top 10 “streak” and a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
In the 2 Road Course races this year he’s finished 2nd and 38th while running 58% of his laps in the Top 15 and leading 0 laps
At Chicago last year McDowell finished 5th in Stage 1 and 2, ran 90% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 7th in the race
With this being the only Chicago Cup race the only stats to add are that he led 0 laps and had the 4th best Driver Rating (105.3)
Outlook for this weekend
Michael McDowell has had minimal success this year as he got his 5th DNF and 11th finish out of the Top 20 in the first 19 races last weekend at Nashville. The good news is that this week is a Road Course where he hasn’t ran terrible this year and has a 2nd place finish, but unfortunately his other finish was a 38th place DNF. However, this is Chicago where McDowell ran well last year and finished in the Top 10. Looking at these stats it’s simple, if McDowell can finish he’ll probably finish Top 10 this weekend, but don’t count on him finishing.

32nd in Owner Points – Shane Van Gisbergen

Main Points & Outlook
Shane Van Gisbergen is notable because of how he did in the Chicago race last year
Van Gisbergen’s last race was at Charlotte where he ran just 3% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 28th
He’s only ran in 3 races this year, but he’s been unimpressive as he’s ran just 21% of his laps in the Top 15, has a 26.17 Avg. Stage Finish, and a 26.43 Avg. Race Finish
He has no streaks this year
At Chicago he is on a 1 race Win “streak” and a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
He’s ran just 1 of the 2 Road Course races this year and in it he ran just 49% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 20th
At Chicago last year Van Gisbergen lit the NASCAR world on fire as he led 9 laps, ran 94% of his laps in the Top 15, had the best Driver Rating (138.1), and won in his first ever NASCAR start
With this being the only Chicago Cup race the only stats to add are that he had 2 Stage T10’s and he got 7.5 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
Shane Van Gisbergen (SVG) has had a decently good Xfinity season this year, but his Cup stats are pretty awful in terms of running and finishing position in the races. What’s worse is that in his only Road Course race this year he didn’t run that well and finished 20th. The only good news is that this week is Chicago where he put his name on the NASCAR map last year by winning here in his first career NASCAR start! However, the stats this year say this week will not go as well for SVG as he probably runs and finishes mediocre in his Kaulig car.
