Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Indianapolis

Last week at Pocono we got to see clean air be the main deciding factor in the race, and in the end it was Ryan Blaney who had the air and breezed on in to his 2nd victory of the year. This week we go to a track that a turn from Pocono is based on, Indianapolis, as we return to the oval for what is hopefully better racing that last week and better racing than the Indy Road Course. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Big track stats, 1 based on the last Indianapolis race, 1 based on their Indianapolis oval stats over the last 5 years, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 21 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Indianapolis, 2023/24 Big track (2+ miles, non-drafting) statistics and Indianapolis statistics from the past 5 Cup seasons since there haven’t been any races in the Next Gen.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Tyler Reddick (4 in a row, 2nd week)

1st in Points – Chase Elliott

After losing his Top 20 streak at Chicago Chase Elliott started a new streak last week at Pocono. He hopes to continue that streak and maybe start a win streak at Indy this weekend. Photo by Rich Graessle — Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Chase Elliott is notable because of his 2020 race at the Indianapolis oval
Elliott got a total of 15 Stage Pts last week at Pocono and ran 90% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to a 9th place finish
His 10.52 Avg. Finish, 99.98 Completed Laps%, 1 Finish out of the Top 20, 0 DNF’s, 27 Stage T10’s, and 10.65 Avg. Stage Finish all rank 1st or 2nd in the 2024 Ranks above
He is currently on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak and has the longest such streak in the Cup Series this year (9 stages), but his longest Top 5/10 streak is just 3 races
His only streak here at Indianapolis is an active 2 straight Stage T10 streak
He’s ran 79% of his laps in the last 4 Big track races in the Top 15, but he has just 1 Top 5 finish and only 2.5 Stage Pts Per Stage
In the last Indianapolis oval race (2020) Elliott led 16% of his laps, got 16 Stage Pts, and had the 2nd best Driver Rating; but ended up 11th in the race
He’s finished 9th and 11th in the last 2 Indianapolis oval races while running just 58% of his laps in the Top 15, but he has led 8% of his laps in the 2 races
Outlook for this weekend
Chase Elliott got back to his Top 20 finishing ways at Pocono as he finished Top 10 for the first time since Iowa. Despite the string of bad finishes he was on he still has some of the best 2024 stats above and is 1st in points, but he has struggled to finish Top 2. That may not get any better this weekend as he’s struggled a bit in the last 4 Big track races, but he does have 1 Top 3 and 3 Top 10’s. What’s more is that this week is the Indy oval where he had the 2nd best Driver Rating in 2020, but finished 11th. Overall, don’t expect a great race from Elliott this weekend as he either runs well and finishes poor or runs poor and finishes well.

2nd in Points – Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson was fast on pit road last week, a little too fast which cost him a Top 10 most likely. He now returns to Indy where a pit road speeding penalty undid his Indy 500 debut as well. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Larson is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 21 races (20 races for him)
Larson ran just 70% of his laps in the Top 15 at Pocono last week and got only 5 Stage Pts en route to a 13th place finish
His only 2024 Ranks above out of the top 2 are his 13.65 Avg. Finish, 97.41 Completed Laps%, 10 Top 10’s, 6 Finishes out of the Top 20, and 3 DNF’s
His longest Pole streak this year (3 races) is longer than his longest Top 10 streak this year (2 races), but he did have a 7 straight Stage T10 streak at one point this year
In the mid 2010’s he had a 3 race Top 10 finish streak at Indianapolis
He has a 16.75 Avg. Finish in the last 4 Big track races with a best finish of just 5th, only 1 Top 10, and he’s ran just 53% of his laps in the Top 15
Larson did not race in the most recent Indianapolis oval race due to suspension
In his only Cup race here since the start of 2019 he ran 90% of his laps in the Top 15 and had a 90.8 Avg. Driver Rating, but he wound up with a DNF and a 33rd place finish
Outlook for this weekend
Kyle Larson missing Charlotte could cost him the regular season championship as even with the best stats in many of the 2024 categories he sits 2nd in points. The news doesn’t get any better when looking at his Big track stats since the start of last year as he’s not ran well or finished well in the 4 races. Some good news is that he ran well in his only Indy oval start within the last 5 years, but he ended up with a DNF. Based on these stats above do not expect much from Larson this weekend as he probably runs mediocre at best and maybe finishes even worse than that.

4th in Points – Denny Hamlin

Denny Hamlin’s 2024 season is full of good runs, but not always great finishes. He’s hoping Indy can be like Pocono last week where he runs and finishes good. Photo by Jonathan Bachman — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Denny Hamlin is notable because of his stats in the last 4 Big track Cup races
Hamlin picked up 19 Stage Pts, including a Stage 2 Win, at Pocono last week, led 19% of the race, and ran 95% of his laps in the Top 15; but he finished 2nd
12 of his 17 2024 Ranks above are T5th or better including his 96.69 Avg. Driver Rating, 3 Wins, 8 Top 5’s, 5 Stage Wins, and 28 Stage T10’s
He is currently on a 3 straight Stage T10 streak and earlier this year he had a 5 straight Stage T10 streak and a 5 race Top 5 finish streak
In his career at Indianapolis he’s had a 3 race Top 5 streak, but his longest Stage T10 streak is his current 2 stage streak
In the last 4 Big track races he has a 3.0 Avg. Finish with a Win, 3 Top 3’s, a worst finish of 6th, and 6 Stage Pts Per Stage
The 2020 Indianapolis race saw Hamlin run 97% of his laps in the Top 15, lead 12% of the race, and get 13 Stage Pts; but a late wreck caused him to DNF in 28th
In the last 2 Indianapolis oval races he’s finished 6th and 28th with a 100.5 Avg. Driver Rating and 3 Stage T10’s, while running 81% of his laps in the Top 15
Outlook for this weekend
Denny Hamlin hasn’t finished great in every race this year, but he’s probably had the best races of any driver and last week he finally broke through for his first Top 10 since Gateway. Based on his Big track stats he won’t have to wait that long for his next Top 10 as he’s been great at running on these track and finishing on them since the start of 2023. However, this is Indianapolis where he’s ran great in the last 2 oval races, but in the last race couldn’t get a good finish due to a late race crash. Overall, expect Hamlin to be nothing short of great this weekend, and if he can avoid a crash expect him to finish near the front.

5th in Points – William Byron

William Byron won 3 of the first 8 races, but hasn’t won since. However, this weekend is a big race heading back to the Indy oval and thus Byron must be considered a favorite. Photo by Jonathan Bachman — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
William Byron is notable because he sits 5th in points after Pocono
At Pocono Byron got 14 Stage Pts and ran 88% of his laps in the Top15 en route to a 4th place finish
All of his 2024 Ranks above are T10th or better, but only his 12.81 Avg. Finish, 3 Wins, 4 Top 2’s, 6 Top 3’s, 12 Top 10’s, and 1 DNF are T3rd or better
After Pocono he is on a 2 race Top 10 finish streak and a 2 straight Stage T10 streak, and earlier this year he had a 5 race Top 10 finish streak
His only streak here at Indianapolis is a 2 straight Stage T10 streak between the 2019 and 2020 race
In the last 4 Big track races he’s ran 83% of his laps in the Top 15 and led 11% of his laps, but he has a 19.5 Avg. Finish with just 1 Top 10 (last week)
Byron won Stage 1 in the 2020 Indianapolis race, but a mid-race issue caused him to run just 51% of his laps in the Top 15 and finish 27th with the 17th best Driver Rating
In the last 2 Indianapolis oval races he’s ran just 60% of his laps in the Top 15 and gotten 2 Stage T10’s, but he’s led 5% of his laps and has 1 Top 5 finish
Outlook for this weekend
William Byron has been great at finishing races this year, but his stages have been lacking a bit, as have his runs as a whole in races. However, the opposite has been true in the last 4 Big track races as he’s done pretty good in the races and in stages, but he’s only had 1 Top 10 finish in the 4 races. Then again, this is the Indy oval where we haven’t raced at since 2020, but in his last 2 Cup races here he’s not ran particularly great and has just 1 good finish. In all, it seems Byron will have a good run this weekend and will have speed, but the only question is if he can turn that into a good finish.

14th in Points – Joey Logano

Main Points & Outlook
Joey Logano is notable because of his stats at the Indianapolis oval since the start of 2019
Last week Logano got 6 Stage Pts and ran 93% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to an impressive 5th place finish
His 2024 has not been impressive as only his 1 Win, 3 Poles, 2 Top 2’s, and 1 Stage Win are T10th or better in the 2024 Ranks above
He is on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak after Pocono which matches his longest Top 10 finish streak this year
At Indianapolis he once had a 5 race Top 10 streak and he is currently on a 2 race Top 10 streak
In the last 4 Big track Cup races he’s ran 82% of his laps in the Top 15 and has 4 Stage Pts Per Stage, but he has just 2 Top 10’s and the 12th best Avg. Finish (16.0)
In the 2020 Indianapolis race Logano started first, but he got 0 Stage T10’s and ran just 53% of his laps in the Top 15. However, he did end up finishing 10th in the race
He’s finished 2nd and 10th in the last 2 Indianapolis oval races while acquiring 4.25 Stage Pts Per Stage and getting a 104.8 Avg. Driver Rating, but he’s only ran 74% of his laps in the Top 15
Outlook for this weekend
Joey Logano hasn’t had the best of years in 2024, but he has a win which most likely will get him a playoff spot. However, his in-race stats are pretty bad, but this cannot be said of him at Big tracks. In the last 4 Big track races he’s ran well, but in turn hasn’t finished well in half the races. Thankfully for Logano this is Indianapolis where he’s ran decently well in the last 2 races and has finished both of those races in the Top 10. Overall, the stats above are a bit murky, but the way it seems is Logano will at least have a decent run and finish this weekend.
