Craftsman Truck Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Richmond

Welcome back NASCAR. Before the Olympic break the Truck Series saw Ty Majeski come back from a mid race penalty to destroy the competition by leading the last 56 laps en route to Ford’s first Truck win of 2024. Up next is another Short track in Richmond, but this time the focus is on the playoff bubble since this is the last race of the 2024 Truck Regular Season. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, and since we are so close to the playoffs all 5 are because of their proximity to the Drivers or Owners cutline in points. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 15 races since the Playoffs started in 2016. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Richmond, 2024 Short track (under 1 mile) statistics and Richmond statistics from the past 5 Truck seasons.
Note: for the outlooks in which it is based on points position every driver is in consideration.

8th in Points/10th in Owner Points – Taylor Gray

Main Points & Outlook
Taylor Gray is notable because his No.17 truck is 10th in owner points, but only 26 points above the cutline
Taylor only ran 24% of his laps at IRP in the Top 15 and he ended up finishing 16th, one lap down
14 of his 17 2024 Ranks above are T10th or better including his 12.87 Avg. Finish, 12.47 Avg. Stage Finish, and 8 Top 10’s; but he also has 2 DNF’s with 0 Stage Wins
At one point this year he had a 2 race Top 5 streak, a 6 race Top 10 streak, and a 4 straight Stage T10 streak
He has no streaks at Richmond over one in a row
He has a 10.5 Avg. Finish in the 4 Short track races this year with 2 Top 10’s and a worst finish of 16th, but he only has 1.75 Stage Pts Per Stage
Last year at Richmond Taylor ran 73% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 14th, but he got 0 Stage T10’s and had just the 17th best Driver Rating
In his 2 races at Richmond he’s finished 6th and 14th while running 74% of his laps in the Top 15 and getting just 1.25 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
Taylor Gray’s 2024 stats show why he’s all but locked into the driver’s playoff, but he still needs a decent run (and no new winner) to get his No.17 truck into the owner’s playoff. What’s more is that this weekend is a Short track where he’s finished well in most races this year, but he hasn’t done too well in stages in the 4 races. Even more so-so news is that this weekend is Richmond where he’s ran decent and finished decent in his 2 Truck races, but again has struggled in stages. Overall, this weekend should be a decent race for Taylor at worse, and as long as no new owner wins then expect him and the 17 Truck in both playoffs.

9th in Points/11th in Owner Points – Ben Rhodes

Ben Rhodes is still looking for what went wrong at IRP, but thankfully for him he has enough of a points cushion that he probably stays above the cutline after Richmond. Photo by Justin Casterline — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Ben Rhodes is notable because he’s 9th in points 22 points above the cutline, and because his No.99 truck is 11th in owner points 26 points below the cutline
At IRP Rhodes started 15th, but he ran 0 laps in the Top 15 and finished 21st, one lap down
13 of his 17 2024 Ranks above are T10th or better including the 4th best Avg. Stage Finish (10.03), but he also has as many Top 10’s as finishes out of the Top 20 (5)
His longest Top 10 streak this year is 3 straight races and his longest Stage T10 streak is 5 straight stages
At Richmond he had a 2 race Top 10 streak from 2020-2021, and he is actively on a 2 straight Stage T10 streak
In the 4 Short track races this year he’s ran just 51% of his laps in the Top 15 and has just 1 Top 15 finish with 2 finishes out of the Top 20
Rhodes finished 2nd in Stage 1 and 2 in the 2023 Richmond race and had the 3rd best Driver Rating, but he ended up 12th at the finish
In the last 4 Richmond truck races he has a 10.0 Avg. Finish with a best of 3rd and worst of 18th, but he does have the 5th best Avg. Driver Rating above and has gotten 6.13 Stage Pts Per Stage here
Outlook for this weekend
Ben Rhodes has struggled this year, but his 2024 Ranks above say he deserves the playoff spot he is likely to get with a good run this weekend. However, last week did not help his cause much and it might not get better as we head to another Short track where he’s ran poor and finished poor in the 4 races this year. Then again, this is Richmond where Rhodes has ran well in the last 4 races and even better has finished well, for the most part. In all, this weekend may not be great for Rhodes but he should run good enough to lock up his driver playoff spot.

10th in Points – Tanner Gray

Based on 2024 Ranks Tanner Gray may be the most undeserving driver above the cutline, but he’ll have to face his Richmond demons head on if he wants to stay above the cutline and make the playoffs. Photo by Justin Casterline — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Tanner Gray is notable because he’s 10th in points only 5 points on the right side of the cutline
In the last Truck race, IRP, Tanner ran just 35% of his laps in the Top 15 and he finished 20th with 0 Stage Pts, one lap down
Only 8 of his 17 2024 Ranks above are T10th or better and of the 26 drivers this year to get a Truck Top 5 he is not one of them, but he is also one of just two drivers with 7+ Truck starts to not finish out of the Top 20 this year
His longest Top 10 streak this year is just 3 straight races and his longest Stage T10 streak is just 2 straight stages
He has no streaks here at Richmond
In the 4 Short track races this year he’s ran only 39% of his laps in the Top 15 and has gotten 0.38 Stage Pts Per Stage with just 1 Top 15 finish
At Richmond last year Tanner ran all but 1 of his laps out of the Top 15, but it was the last one as he finished 16th, one lap down
In the 4 races at Richmond since the start of 2019 he’s ran only 49% of his laps in the Top 15 and has just a 66.95 Avg. Driver Rating with 0 Top 15’s and 0 Stage T10’s
Outlook for this weekend
With a subpar day at IRP Tanner Gray now finds himself above the driver playoff cutline, but not by much, and his 2024 Ranks above say he doesn’t deserve a spot in the playoffs. However, he’s done a great job of not getting terrible finishes, but he’s not done well of finishing at Short tracks this year and his runs are even worse. Speaking of even worse the news only gets worse. This weekend is Richmond where Tanner has 0 Top 15’s in 4 starts and hasn’t ran great, but he did run well last year. Based on these stats it will be a mediocre day at best for Tanner this weekend, and if he makes the playoffs it’s only because of how bad his competition does, not because of how well he does.

11th in Points – Daniel Dye

Daniel Dye had a tough race at IRP and now finds himself below the cutline. He’ll have to do better than he did at Richmond last year if he wants to get back above that line. Image credit: @BMR_NASCAR Twitter/X Page

Main Points & Outlook
Daniel Dye is notable because he’s 11th in points just 5 points below the cutline
Dye started 7th at IRP and finished 10th in Stage 1, but a loose wheel in Stage 2 caused him to run just 40% of his laps in the Top 15 and finish 27th
12 of his 17 2024 Ranks above are T10th or better, but 3 of those are his 0 Stage Wins, 53 Stage Pts, and 14.9 Avg. Stage Finish; and he has the same amount of Top 10’s as finishes out of the Top 20 (5)
His longest Top 10 streak this year is 2 straight races and his longest Stage T10 streak of 5 straight stages was broken in Stage 2 of the IRP race
He has no streaks here at Richmond
He’s ran 67% of his laps in the Top 15 at the 4 Short tracks this year, but he has just a 15.5 Avg. Finish with 1 Top 10 and only a 17.13 Avg. Stage Finish
In the 2023 Richmond race Dye ran 0 laps in the Top 15 en route to an unimpressive 21st place finish
This is his only Truck race at Richmond and thus the only stats to add are that he got 0 Stage Pts and had just a 59.5 Avg. Driver Rating
Outlook for this weekend
After a tough race at IRP Daniel Dye is once again below the cutline, and part of that reason is his 2024 stage stats as 3 of the 4 are worse than T10th in the 2024 Ranks above. This has also been a struggle of his on Short tracks this year, but some good news is he’s finished 3 of those 4 races in the Top 15. However, this is Richmond where in his one start, last year, Dye ran terrible and finished out of the Top 20. In all, the stats, especially stage stats, aren’t great for Dye this weekend and it’ll be hard, but not impossible, for him to make the Truck playoffs.

Main Points & Outlook
Stewart Friesen is notable because he’s 12th in points 16 points below the cutline
Friesen ran just 25% of his laps at IRP in the Top 15, after starting 8th, en route to a dismal 33rd place finish, 6 laps down
Just 9 of his 17 2024 Ranks above are T10th or better which includes his 15.93 Avg. Finish, 50 Stage Pts, and 16.13 Avg. Stage Finish; but he does have the 10th best Avg. Driver Rating (77.56)
His longest Top 10 streak this year is 3 straight races and his longest Stage T10 streak is 4 straight stages
At Richmond he once had a 2 straight Stage T10 streak, 2022 race, but that’s it
At Short tracks this year he’s ran only 52% of his laps in the Top 15 and he has just 1 Top 15 in the 4 races with a 16.5 Avg. Stage Finish
Last year at Richmond wasn’t any better as Friesen ran 0 laps in the Top 15 and finished 27th with the 24th best Driver Rating (48.5)
In his 4 races at Richmond he has 1 Top 10 and he’s only ran 60% of his laps in the Top 15, but he does have 3 Top 15’s and 2.38 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
Stewart Friesen is on the outside looking in at the playoffs and much of this can be credited to his poor stage stats and subpar Avg. Race Finish, but the good news is he’s ran decent otherwise this year. However, this is a Short track where he’s not ran too well and has finished even worse, getting just 1 Top 15 in 4 races. What’s worse is that he ran terrible at Richmond last year, but in his career Friesen hasn’t been terrible here as he had never finished out of the Top 15 before last year. In total, it seems it will be hard to Friesen to overcome the deficit at hand this weekend at Richmond and he probably misses out on the playoffs again.
