Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Michigan

Richmond has become the most controversial track on the schedule as both races this year have had fans up in arms after the race. This time it was Austin Dillon slamming his way to a win and a playoff birth, but NASCAR said not so fast as they took away his playoff birth. Now we head to Michigan where hopefully we get to enjoy some good racing and leave the controversy at home. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Big track stats, 1 based on the last Michigan race, 1 based on their Next Gen Michigan stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 23 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Michigan, 2024 Big track (2+ miles, non-drafting) statistics and Michigan statistics in the Next Gen car.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Denny Hamlin (4 in a row, 2nd week) and Kyle Larson (4 in a row)

2nd in Points – Tyler Reddick

Tyler Reddick came oh so close yet again last week at Richmond. Maybe his luck will turn around at Michigan and he’ll be able to get that elusive 2nd win of 2024. Photo by Sean Gardner — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Tyler Reddick is notable because he sits 2nd in points after Richmond
Last week at Richmond Reddick was able to pick up 6 Stage Pts and run 96% of his laps in the Top 15 before having a front row view for the finish, in which he finished 3rd
His worst 2024 Rank above is (T)6th (1 Win, 160 Stage Pts, and 8 Playoff Pts), and he leads the series with most Top 5’s (10) and most Top 10’s (16)
All of his notable streaks this year are active streaks, his 2 race Top 3 finish streak, 6 race Top 10 finish streak, and 6 straight Stage T10 streak
In terms of Michigan he has no notable streaks
He has finishes of 2nd and 6th in the 2 Big track races this year with 1 Pole, a 6.0 Avg. Stage Finish, and he’s led 12% of his laps in the 2 races
At Michigan last year Reddick ran just 63% of his laps in the Top 15 and got 0 Stage T10’s en route to a 30th place finish after issues in the last stage
In the 2 Michigan Next Gen races he has finished 29th and 30th with 1 DNF and 0 Stage Wins, but he has ran 71% of his laps in the Top 15
Outlook for this weekend
Tyler Reddick was oh so close to another victory last week at Richmond, but he’s now had 9 Top 8 finishes in the last 10 races. This amazing streak has helped him amas some of the most consistent 2024 Ranks above. What’s more is that this weekend is a Big track where he’s ran very well this year and has finished even better. However, this is Michigan where he’s had no luck in the Next Gen car, as even with decent runs he has bad finishes in the 2 races. In total based on his recent success watch out for Reddick to run and finish well this weekend, but this is Michigan so don’t be surprised if he doesn’t finish.

3rd in Points – Chase Elliott

Chase Elliott now sits 3rd in points after Richmond. He’ll look to have a good day at Michigan this weekend and vault himself back to 1st in points. Photo by Sean Gardner — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Chase Elliott is notable because of his 2024 season stats thru 23 races
At Richmond Elliott ran 88% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to 6 Stage Pts and a 9th place finish
He is the only driver (with 10+ Cup starts) to not get a DNF this year and he has the best Completed Laps% thru 23 races of any driver since 2004, but he has just 1 Top 2 finish and 1 Stage Win
His longest Top 10 streak is his active 3 race Top 10 streak and earlier this year he had a 9 straight Stage T10 streak
As far as Michigan streaks go he had a 3 race Top 2 streak here from 2016-2017 and had a 6 race Top 10 streak from 2016-2018
He’s finished 9th and 10th in the two Big track races this year while getting 6 Stage Pts Per Stage, but he’s only ran 70% of his laps in the Top 15
Last year Elliott ran every lap of his in the Top 15, but he only ran 34 laps before crashing out of the race to a 36th place DNF
In the 2 Next Gen races at Michigan he’s finished 11th and 36th with just a 61.7 Avg. Driver Rating, and he’s gotten 0 Stage T10’s in the 4 stages
Outlook for this weekend
Chase Elliott has been Mr. Consistent this year as his worst finish is just 21st and he’s also the only driver with 10+ starts this year to not get a DNF. What’s more is that he’s on a 3 race Top 10 finish streak and in the two Big track races this year he has 2 Top 10’s, but he hasn’t exactly ran great in the races despite doing well in stages. However, there is bad news in the fact this weekend is Michigan where he’s not done well in the two Next Gen races, including a DNF last year. Overall, the stats above say Elliott may not run great this weekend, but he should finish in or around the Top 10.

5th in Points – Ryan Blaney

Main Points & Outlook
Ryan Blaney is notable because of his stats in the 2 Big track races this year
Last week at Richmond Blaney ran 69% of his laps in the Top 15, but he got 0 Stage Pts and finished the race 11th
This year he has the 5th best Avg. Finish (14.22) with 2 Wins and 167 Stage Pts, but he has almost as many finishes out of the Top 20 (6) as in the Top 5 (7)
His longest Top 5 streak this year is 3 races and his longest Top 10 streak and Stage T10 streak is just 4
At Michigan he is currently on a 3 race Top 10 finish streak and from 2019-2021 he had a 6 straight Stage T10 streak
In the 2 Big track races this year he’s finished 1st and 3rd with a 121.65 Avg. Driver Rating and he’s ran 88% of his laps in the Top 15, but he has a measly 15.75 Avg. Stage Finish
At Michigan last year Blaney led 1 lap and got 0 Stage Pts, but he did run 84% of his laps in the Top 15 and ended up finishing 9th
In the 2 Michigan Next Gen races he’s finished 5th and 9th, but he’s only led 0.25% of his laps, ran just 69% of his laps in the Top 15, and has 0 Stage T10’s
Outlook for this weekend
Ryan Blaney hasn’t been great this year, but he’s been solidly good all year long when you look at his 2024 stats above. What’s better is that he has 7 Top 11’s in the last 8 races and we now head to a Big track. In the two Big track races this year he’s ran great and has finished even greater, but his stages have been a little lackluster. The same can be said for him at Michigan in the Next Gen car as he’s failed to get a Stage T10 here in 4 stages, but he has finished both races in the Top 10. In all, don’t expect great stages from Blaney this weekend, but expect a good finish from him nonetheless.

8th in Points – Martin Truex Jr.

Martin Truex Jr needs a great run and a great finish in the worst way. Maybe he can get that this weekend at a track he finished 2nd last year, Michigan. Photo by Sean Gardner – Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Martin Truex Jr. is notable because of his 2023 Michigan Cup race
Last week at Richmond Truex got 8 Stage Pts and ran 98% of his laps in the Top 15, but due to a motor issue he only ran 250 of 408 laps en route to a 37th place DNF
This was his 1st DNF of the year, but he has 7 finishes out of the Top 20 to just 9 Top 10 finishes and only 7 of his 17 2024 Ranks above are better than 10th
In terms of streaks this year he had a 5 race Top 10 streak earlier and an 8 straight Stage T10 streak as well
He is on a 1 race Top 2 finish “streak” at Michigan and an impressive 7 race Top 10 streak while also holding an active 2 straight Stage Win streak here
At Big tracks this year he’s ran only 50% of his laps in the Top 15 with finishes of 8th and 27th, but he has 1 Stage Win and he’s led 4% of his laps
In the 2023 Michigan race Truex led 24% of his laps, won both stages, and had the best Driver Rating (131.7); but he ended up 2nd at the finish
He’s finished 2nd and 6th in the 2 Michigan Next Gen races while also picking up 2 Stage Wins and having the best Avg. Driver Rating (115.75)
Outlook for this weekend
Martin Truex Jr’s 2024 stats have been going the wrong way over the last bit of races as he’s finished 4 of the last 5 races out of the Top 20. However, his stage stats are still some of the best in the Cup Series this year. This cannot be said about his stage stats at Big tracks, and in fact he hasn’t ran or finished well on these track this year. Then again, this is Michigan where Truex came so close to winning last year, and he has some of the best Michigan Next Gen stats of any driver. So, while Truex hasn’t been good of late the stats say to watch for him to be good this weekend with the potential for a much needed great finish.

12th in Points – Bubba Wallace

Main Points & Outlook
Bubba Wallace is notable because of his stats in the 2 Next Gen races at Michigan
Wallace was able to get 9 Stage Pts at Richmond last week and he ran 98% of his laps in the Top 15 en route to a nice 4th place finish
His best 2024 Rank above is T6th (6 finishes out of the Top 20), but he also has just 5 Top 5’s, 99 Stage Pts, and 0 Top 3 finishes
He is currently on a 2 race Top 5 streak, a 3 race Top 10 streak, and a 3 straight Stage T10 streak
His only notable streak at Michigan is his active 2 straight Stage T10 streak
He’s finished 5th and 10th in the 2 Big track races this year, but he has just 2.5 Stage Pts Per Stage and has ran only 59% of his laps in the Top 15
Last year at Michigan Wallace got 16 Stage Pts, but he ran just 73% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished a disappointing 18th
In the 2 Next Gen races at Michigan he has 1 Pole and 1 Top 2 finish while running 82% of his laps in the Top 15 and having a great 106.6 Avg. Driver Rating
Outlook for this weekend
Bubba Wallace is getting hot at the right time as he’s now gotten 4 Top 10’s in the last 5 races, but he’s still very close to the cutline thanks to the fact he didn’t do great the rest of the year. However, this weekend could be his time to shine as this is a Big track where, despite not running great, he’s been able to finish both races this year in the Top 10. What’s more is that Wallace’s Next Gen stats here aren’t too shabby, but last year he did struggle a bit after the first 2 stages. Based on the stats, expect a decent race from Wallace this weekend, but don’t be surprised if he’s near the front at the end of the race.
