Cup Series Notable Drivers Statistics & Outlook: Richmond

Kyle Larson has been the reigning NASCAR Cup series winner the last 3 weeks, but of course 2 of those have been off weeks. In the last race NASCAR left plenty to talk about between penalties, restarts, and questionable timing of cautions. Up next we head to another track that had a questionable caution and plenty of controversy this Spring, Richmond. I have picked 5 notable drivers to look at, 1 based on 2024 season stats, 1 based on Short track stats, 1 based on the last Richmond race, 1 based on their Next Gen Richmond stats, and 1 based on the highest in points that wasn’t already picked. Here is a look at those 5 notable drivers 2024 season statistics, along with ranks among drivers in 2024 as well as ranking through 22 races since the Playoffs started in 2004. We will also highlight notable streaks accomplished through the year and at Richmond, 2024 Short track (under 1 mile) statistics and Richmond statistics in the Next Gen car.
Note: any driver in 4 straight Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next two, or any driver in 4 of 5 Cup outlook articles is not in consideration for the next one. This resets after they are put back into consideration.
This week not in consideration: Denny Hamlin (4 in a row)

1st in Points – Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson got to burn it down in the last NASCAR Cup race, Indy. He’ll look to have the same sort of luck this weekend at Richmond and become the first driver with back-to-back wins this year. Image credit: @TeamHendrick Twitter/X Page

Main Points & Outlook
Kyle Larson is notable because of his 2024 stats thru 22 races (21 races for him)
At Indy Larson ran 70% of his laps in the Top 15 and finished 2nd in Stage 1 en route to a crazy finish that saw him wind up 1st
Thru 22 races he leads the series in Avg. Driver Rating, Wins, Poles, Top 2’s, Stage Pts, Avg. Stage Finish, and Playoff Pts
His longest Pole streak this year (3 races) is longer than his longest Top 10 streak this year (2 races), but he did have a 7 straight Stage T10 streak at one point this year
At Richmond he’s on a 1 race Pole and Top 3 finish “streak”, and in the late 2010’s he had a 3 race Top 10 finish streak here
In the 4 Short track races this year he’s ran 88% of his laps in the Top 15 and has a 2.75 Avg. Stage Finish with 3 Poles and 3 Top 5 finishes
In the Spring Richmond race Larson ran 99% of his laps in the Top 15 and led 35% of the race en route to 17 Stage Pts and a 3rd place finish
He’s ran in all 5 Next Gen Richmond races and in them he has a Win, 3 Top 5’s, a 101.28 Avg. Driver Rating, and 4.8 Stage Pts Per Stage
Outlook for this weekend
Kyle Larson is now back on top of the Cup Series points standings after his win at Indy, and he now leads in 9 of the 17 2024 Ranks above. What’s more is that we head to a Short track this weekend where he’s been fast, performed well, and finished good most of the 4 races this year. Even better news is that this is Richmond where Larson finished 3rd earlier this year and has ran great and finished decent more often than not in the Next Gen car. Overall, watch out for Larson to do well this weekend, especially in stages, and with a little luck he could be the first Cup driver to win back-to-back races in 2024.

2nd in Points – Chase Elliott

Main Points & Outlook
Chase Elliott is notable because of his stats in the 4 Short track races this year
At Indy Elliott was penalized after his first pit stop causing him to run just 50% of his laps in the Top 15, but he was able to finish 2nd in Stage 2 and 10th in the race
In 2024 he has the best Avg. Finish, best Completed Laps%, and the fewest finishes out of the Top 20; but he also has just 1 Win with only 1 Top 2 finish
His longest Top 5/10 streak this year is 3 races, but he is currently on a 2 race Top 10 streak and he has the longest Stage T10 streak of the year at 9 straight stages
At Richmond he is on a 1 race Top 5 “streak” and in the late 2010’s he had a 3 race Top 10 streak
He’s been great on Short tracks this year as in the 4 races he has the best Avg. Finish (4.75) and the 2nd best Avg. Driver Rating (106.03) with a worst finish of only 8th
Elliott started 2nd this Spring at Richmond, led 5 laps, ran 96% of his laps in the Top 15, and finished 5th; but he only got 4 Stage Pts
He’s ran only 4 of the 5 Next Gen races at Richmond, but in them he has a 9.25 Avg. Finish with a best of 5th and worst of 15th. However, he’s only led 0.37% of his laps
Outlook for this weekend
Chase Elliott had a frustrating day a few weeks ago at Indy, but his 2024 stats are still some of the best, even without a lot of Top 2 finishes. The same can be said about his Short track stats this year as he’s ran very well and has finished very consistent, but he hasn’t finished Top 2 in the 4 races. His Richmond Next Gen stats bring more of the same as he’s run well in the 4 races he’s ran, but he has a best finish of only 5th. In all, expect a good day from Elliott as he should run well all day and finish well, but don’t expect too great of a finish from him.

3rd in Points – Tyler Reddick

Tyler Reddick was there to pounce if the caution flew earlier at Indy. This week he’ll look to get his 6th straight Top 10, which would be the longest by any Cup driver this year. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Tyler Reddick is notable because he’s 3rd in points after Indy
Reddick won the Pole at Indy, got 11 Stage Pts, ran 91% of his laps in the Top 15, and lead 24% of the race en route to a controversial runner-up finish
His worst 2024 Rank above is only 6th (1 Win, 154 Stage Pts, and 8 Playoff Pts) and he leads the series in Top 10 finishes (15) while also having the 2nd best Avg. Finish (11.27)
He is currently on a 5 race Top 10 streak (tied for longest in 2024) and a 4 straight Stage T10 streak (his personal best streak in 2024)
He is on a 1 race Top 10 “streak” and a 1 straight Stage T10 “streak” here at Richmond
In the 4 Short track races this year he has a 17.25 Avg. Finish with only 2 Top 15 finishes to 2 finishes out of the Top 20, and he’s only ran 47% of his laps in the Top 15
He started 19th in the 2024 Spring Richmond race with a 10th place finish in Stage 2 and the race while running 81% of his laps in the Top 15
In the 5 Next Gen races at Richmond he has a 17.0 Avg. Finish with just 2 Top 15’s, a best finish of 10th, and he’s only ran 54% of his laps in the Top 15
Outlook for this weekend
Tyler Reddick is one of the hottest drivers in the Cup Series as he’s finished 8 of the last 9 races in the Top 10, and he’s been one of the most consistent drivers this year when looking at the 2024 stats above. However, this week is a Short track where he’s struggled to run well, finish well, or get Stage Pts this year. A little better news is that this is Richmond where Reddick ran well and finished Top 10 in the Spring, but overall he’s not faired well here in the Next Gen. All in all, don’t expect too much from Reddick this weekend, and based on the stats don’t be surprised if he finishes out of the Top 10.

7th in Points – Martin Truex Jr.

Main Points & Outlook
Martin Truex Jr. is notable because of how he ran in the 2024 Spring Richmond race
Indy was a struggle for Truex as an early Stage 3 wreck was part of a reason he ran just 16% of his laps in the Top 15 and finish 27th, 2 laps down
He has more finishes out of the Top 20 this year (6) than in the Top 5 (4), but he does have the 4th most Stage Wins, Stage T10’s, and Stage Pts
Earlier this year he had a 2 race Top 5 streak, 5 race Top 10 streak, and 8 straight Stage T10 streak
He has MANY Richmond streaks in his career including a 4 race Top 3 streak, 7 race Top 5 streak, a 19 straight Stage T10 streak; and he’s currently on a 2 straight Top 10 streak
He has a 9.75 Avg. Finish in the 4 Short track races this year and a 10.63 Avg. Stage Finish, but he has just 2 Top 5’s and has only ran 67% of his laps in the Top 15
Truex was great in the 2024 Spring Richmond race as he had a 2.5 Avg. Stage Finish and led 56% of the race, but a late controversial restart pushed him to finish 4th
He’s finished between 4th and 11th in the 5 Next Gen Richmond races, has led 19% of his laps, and has ran 89% of his laps in the Top 15
Outlook for this weekend
Martin Truex Jr. has just 2 Top 10’s in the last 10 Cup races and his 2024 stats above show it as there are many 2024 Ranks that are worse than 5th. However, there is good news in the fact this weekend is a Short track where he’s been able to finish well in half the races and has done well in stages. What’s better is that this weekend is Richmond where Truex ran great in the Spring and where he’s finished 10 of the last 11 races in the Top 10. Based on these stats, watch for Truex’s bad race streak to get broken this Richmond as he’ll most likely finish well.

15th in Points – Joey Logano

Joey Logano has been unimpressive overall this year, but over the last 8 races he’s finished every other race in the Top 10. So, after a 34th place finish at Indy he should finish Top 10 this weekend at Richmond. Photo by James Gilbert — Getty Images

Main Points & Outlook
Joey Logano is notable because of his stats at Richmond in the Next Gen car
At Indy Logano ran 91% of his laps in the Top 15, but he only ran 109 of 167 laps due to a Stage 3 crash that caused him to finish 34th
On the year he has a 17.55 Avg. Finish with a 15.36 Avg. Stage Finish, more finishes out of the Top 20 (10) than in the Top 10 (7), and more Poles (3) than Top 3’s (2)
His only notable streaks this year are a 2 race Top 10 streak and 4 straight Stage T10 streak earlier this year
At Richmond he is currently on a 1 race Top 2 finish “streak”, a 2 race Top 5 streak, a 4 race Top 10 streak, and a 3 straight Stage T10 streak
In the 4 Short track races this year he’s ran 78% of his laps in the Top 15, has a 9.0 Avg. Finish, a 7.0 Avg. Stage Finish, and 3 Top 10’s
Earlier this Spring at Richmond Logano ran all but 2 laps in the Top 15, had the 3rd best Driver Rating, a 4.0 Avg. Stage Finish, and a 2nd place race finish
In the 5 Next Gen Richmond races he has 4 Top 10’s while running 88% of his laps in the Top 15, leading 11% of his laps, and getting 8 Stage T10’s
Outlook for this weekend
Joey Logano has struggled in 2024 as his stats above show, but he’s finished every other race over the last 8 races in the Top 10. Even better is that this week is a Short track where he’s ran very well this year and has even finished well in most of the races. However, what’s even better is that this weekend is Richmond where Logano has ran great, done great in stages, and even finished well more often than not in the Next Gen. In total, even with Logano’s struggles this year watch out for him to not just run well, but be a contender for the win this weekend at Richmond.
