Outside the Track: Homestead-Miami

The traveling circus heads to south Florida this weekend to a track listed among the favorites of many drivers – Homestead-Miami Speedway. After a surprise winner at Las Vegas on Sunday, will we see another this weekend? I would say the chances are 50/50 at this point. I would not count anyone out in any of the three races this weekend because the Playoffs have not gone smoothly for Playoff Drivers so far.

However, I am definitely in the group of fans who would like to see the Championship race weekend moved back to Homestead. The racing at Phoenix just is not that good in my opinion and I am not a fan of seeing the Champion potentially decided on a pit selection if there is a late race caution. Homestead is a racers track that is a better fit for a Championship race.

I have personally never been to Homestead-Miami for a race, but it is definitely on my bucket list. If NASCAR decides to move the Championship weekend back there, I will most likely scoop up some tickets and make the trip. For this article, I reached out to a friend who used to live in the area as well as a couple of friends who are long-time ticket holders at the racetrack.

ATTRACTIONS

Located not far from the racetrack near the entrance to Everglades National Park is the Everglades Alligator Farm. This is a great option if you are looking for a unique experience.

It happens to be South Florida’s oldest alligator farm and houses over 2,000 alligators. Your admission ticket includes an alligator show, an alligator feeding demonstration, as well as an airboat ride through part of the Everglades. This definitely sounds like a fun way to spend part of a day!

If you are a shopper, just a few minutes away from the racetrack is the Florida Keys Outlet Marketplace. There are over 40 stores for you to peruse as well as a handful of restaurants nearby.

Looking for some water activity? There is a road right by the racetrack that will take you out to Homestead Bayfront Park. There, you will find a marina, fishing pier, restaurant, a lagoon beach area for swimming and sunbathing, as well as a large picnic area.

This a great option if you want to pick up food somewhere to eat picnic style and have the kids wear off all their energy. There is a parking fee.

If you want to really experience South Florida, tack on a few extra days to your race trip, hit Route 1 right by the track, and head down to the Keys.

There are numerous small islands and towns you will drive through on your way to Key West. Make sure to have a slice or two of Key Lime Pie!

RESTAURANTS

Shiver’s BBQ came highly recommended for lunch or dinner. I was told the restaurant has very good ribs and smoked chicken. You don’t want to skip the cornbread soufflĂ©!

Farmer’s Market Restaurant is suggested for breakfast if you don’t want to pick something up from a fast food restaurant. They serve country-style breakfast food in large portions.
