Outside the Track: Dover

Has everyone from the shock of the finish to the Geico 500 Sunday at Talladega? I was in the stands, and I’m still going back and replaying my video of the finish with my mouth hung open wondering what I just watched.
Next on the NASCAR schedule is one of my favorite tracks – Dover Motor Speedway. I love the high-banked concrete track because it puts on great races. If you have never been to a race in person, you are missing out! From the time the engines fire up until they cut off after the race is over, your seat will vibrate!
If you happen to already have your tickets for this weekend’s races and are looking for some things to do to fill your extra time, here are a few options for you! As always, reach out and let me know of your suggestions to share with NASCAR fans!

ATTRACTIONS

  • Just a few minutes away from the racetrack is the Old State House. It was built in 1791 and served as Delaware’s capitol until 1933. The first floor features an 18th century courtroom and the second floor features the original chambers of the state legislature.

The Old State House is open for visitors and guided tours Wednesday-Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free and there is limited free parking close by.

  • Next, right down the road from the racetrack is the Air Mobility Command Museum. Located right beside the Dover Air Force Base, this museum houses over 30 different aircraft with exhibits telling the story of airlift and air refueling history.

Without a doubt, it is worth a stop just to see inside a former Air Force Two which was used by many Vice Presidents and First Ladies. The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Admission and parking are free.

  • With Delaware being quite small, you are never too far from the water. If the weather cooperates and you feel like it’s warm enough, drive a bit and find numerous beaches along the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

Rehoboth Beach is the most famous, but if you don’t want to drive that far, there are many smaller beaches closer to Dover.

RESTAURANTS

  • Close to the racetrack is Glasgow Deli. This mom and pop restaurant that has been around for decades and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is a great option if you are camping and want to call in an order for pickup anytime of the day.

I was told they make fantastic breakfast sandwiches and their open faced roasted turkey sandwich is a delicious dinner option.

  • Sambo’s Tavern is an adult-only pub overlooking Leipsic River that serves fresh seafood. You might be lucky enough to see your meal delivered by boat! I was told to pass along that they have the best crab and oysters.

  • Lastly, if you want to indulge your sweet tooth, stop by Cumbl Cookies to try out their gourmet cookies. Each week the menu changes! The shop is just down the road from the racetrack and open every day except Sunday.
