Outside the Track: Martinsville

I can’t tell you how excited I am for this weekend! Martinsville Speedway is my home track, only 40 minutes from my house. I’ve been going to races there since I was a teenager. I’ve sat through frigid temps, super hot days, tons of rain, and even snow over the years. Right now this weekend’s forecast is looking not so great – 50s Friday and Saturday, and mid-60s Sunday. No matter what the weather, race fans will still have fun and see a lot of action on the racetrack!

ATTRACTIONS

  • The Wood Brothers Racing Museum is located about 30 minutes from the Speedway in Stuart, VA.

This is the place to go if you want to check out NASCAR history! You will see a ton of memorabilia and racecars that span decades of NASCAR. If you are extra lucky, you might run into a member of the Wood family.

  • If you’re looking for some outdoor activities before you head to the track in the afternoons, Fairy Stone State Park is a great option. Fairy Stone acquires its unique name from the stone crystals known as Fairy Stones that can be found in the park.

There is a cool legend about Fairy Stones that you can read about online. The State Park is about 30 minutes from the track and offers hiking trails, playgrounds, a beach on Philpott Lake for sunbathing and swimming, as well as rowboats, canoes and paddleboards. I doubt you want to sunbathe or get in the water, but more power to you if you’re a brave soul!

RESTAURANTS

  • Award winning bbq, ribs, brisket and chicken are served at Checkered Pig BBQ & Ribs. If you like smoked meat, this is your place to chow down.

  • Jerry’s Pizza Pasta & Grill is just minutes from the racetrack, there is something for everybody at this restaurant. Whole pizzas or pizza by the slice, wings, subs, salads, pasta. No one will leave here hungry!
  • Fenderz Drive-In is a throwback to the old style diners with few seats and a retro vibe inside. Burgers, dogs and ice cream – enough said.

I hope everyone has a great racing weekend, whether at the track or watching at home. If you happen to be at Martinsville, look for Pit Pass Network shirts and hats. We have a couple of our staff who will be in attendance. I’ll be there all three days and would love to meet you!

Captain Tom’s Seafood Restaurant is just a few minutes from the track. Good food.
