The United Rentals 250 at Talladega Superspeedway proved to be a wildcard for some playoff drivers. Jesse Love was the fastest car in qualifying, so he got the pole. William Sawalich joined him on the front row. Christian Eckes and Carson Kvapil started the race in row two. Austin Hill rounded out the top 5. The stage lengths were 25 laps for the first and second stages, with the final stage being 44 laps.
Playoff Drivers Out Early
Love drove like he had been shot out of a cannon at the initial start. The inside line caught his rear bumper and began to jockey for position. Love was able to go from the inside to the outside line, holding off their charges. A third line began to form but could not move forward.
Some contact was made between Connor Mosack and Brenden Queen. They both kept it straight, and the race stayed green.
Several members of the inside line tried to make a run at the lead. They pulled out and were able to take command of the race. Love jumped out to cover it and kept the lead. Austin Hill and Aric Almirola moved to the lead of the inside and outside lanes.
The first caution came out when Jeb Burton got into the back of Sheldon Creed. J. Burton got shuffled into Brandon Jones. Creed was then turned into the outside wall. Ryan Sieg, Carson Kvapil, Harrison Burton, Jordan Anderson, Anthony Alfredo, and Jeremy Clements were also involved.
The red flag was displayed to allow track workers to clean up the mess.
The cleanup was concluded, the yellow flag was displayed, and Nick Sanchez was declared the leader.
Sanchez and Hill restarted the race on the front row. They stayed equal through turns one and two. On the back stretch, the outside line was organized and began to gain ground on the inside.
Hill and Love took charge of the race after pulling away from the field. Hill would lead till the green white checkered flag. He got the stage one win in the United Rentals 250!
Another Red
Kyle Sieg and Dean Thomson, who stayed out of the pits, restarted the race on the front row. Love pushed Thompson out in front of the group. Love then drove to the outside of him to take the lead.
Connor Zilisch powered underneath Love in turns three and four. He drove by him and then moved in front of Love to take the lead.
Love and his teammate, Hill, moved to the inside line and retook the lead from Zilisch.
The top line organized and began to pull away from the inside. Love weaved in front of both lines to keep them behind him.
Allgaier got in front of the inside line and drove it to the front. He got in front of Love to take the lead.
Taylor Gray slowed on the bottom of the track. His engine expired, which ended his day.
The third caution came out when Leland Honeyman was turned off the bumper of Harrison Burton. Honeyman turned into Zilisch. Mosack, Sawalich, Thompson, and Blaine Perkins were also involved.
Again, the red flag was displayed to allow for cleanup.
The green flag came back out with two to go in the stage. Smith and Allgaier restarted on the front row. Love pushed Allgaier out in front. Kvapil pushed Smith, but abandoned him to the outside as soon as the room was available. Allgaier was left in no man’s land out in front. Hill used a push from Kvapil to get by Allgaier for the lead. Hill would take his lead to the end of the stage to win stage two in the United Rentals 250!

Jockeying for Position
Daniel Dye and Christian Eckes restarted the race on the front row. While Dye got the initial jump out front, they remained side by side until Aric Almirola led the middle lane to the front. He took the lead and began to cover the top and bottom lanes.
The inside line dissipated. Most of the cars moved to the middle and outside lanes. Nick Sanchez led the inside, while Almirola led the outside.
Hill got to the inside of Almirola and tried to take the lead. H. Burton took the inside to the front, leaving Almirola and Hill behind. His cousin, J. Burton, pushed him out front, then left him. Allgaier was able to take the outside line back to the front.
Allaier pulled too far ahead. Almirola pushed Hill around Allgaier to take the lead back. The field formed a train on the outside line.
Zilisch got into the outside wall and had to pit for repairs.
Hill continued to lead the outside line. Some drivers tried to get the bottom lane going, but could not make it happen.
The inside line began forming with under five to go.
With two to go, Love jumped to the inside line to charge to the front. On the back stretch, Smith was shuffled out of the top line. That forced him three wide with Honeyman and J. Burton. Almirola was then turned off the nose of Smith and sent back across the track nose-first.
Overtime In ‘Dega
Hill and Josh Williams brought the green flag back out. While Hill quickly jumped out front. Williams was immediately shuffled to the back. Honeyman followed Hill in second. Hill took the white flag in the lead. He swerved to defend the inside and then the outside line.
Nick Sanchez was turned into the outside wall on the back stretch and caught the back of Hill, but could not pass him. Hill got the sweep to win the United Rentals 250! Kvapil, Allgaier, Eckes, and Caesar Bacarella rounded out the top five.

Marvin’s Minute:
All streaks must come to an end. It took the chaotic Talladega to end the top-five streak for Connor Zilisch. With that, he was able to secure his spot in the championship race. Without a doubt, building up so many points to advance is amazing for the youngster. He is my pick to win it all.
Austin Hill showed us nothing we did not already know. He is by far the best superspeedway or drafting driver in the field. He knows exactly where to put his car to win them. Who knows? If he had not had his playoff points taken away, he might have had a great shot in Phoenix. The series continues its playoffs in Martinsville next week.
