Food City 500

Ryan Blaney won the pole position for the Food City 500, and by Lap 13, he had a 1.44-second lead on the field. On Lap 44, Kyle Larson took advantage when Blaney got loose and jumped to the lead. The first caution came on Lap 62 when Brad Keselowski spun out. Larson resumed the lead, extending it to over two seconds, to win the opening stage.

Larson led the field to green for the start of Stage 2. Just 20 laps into the stage, Christopher Bell got loose and brought out the caution. Ultimately, he was diagnosed with a broken toe link. Larson was once again out front after the caution. A hard hit between Alex Bowman, Todd Gilliland, John Hunter Nemechek, and Shane van Gisbergen brought out the caution on Lap 161. Larson was back out front for the restart. With 30 to go in the stage, Blaney was starting to run Larson down, but he needed more laps to seal the deal.

The start of Stage 3 saw more of the same from Larson. On Lap 313, the caution waved as Kyle Busch and Erik Jones wrecked. With 163 to go, Blaney put the bumper to Larson, took the lead, and set sail. Lap 383 brought the next caution, again for SVG. The race resumed with 110 to go and Blaney out front.

Ty Gibbs was closing in when the caution waved with 23 to go as Chase Elliott spun. With 15 to go, Gibbs and Carson Hocevar lined up on the front row, and when the green waved, Tyler Reddick put his name in the hat. With 10 to go, Blaney and Larson rejoined the show. Blaney was fighting Gibbs for the top spot when Riley Herbst brought out the caution with four to go.

Facing NASCAR Overtime, Blaney and Gibbs lined up on the front row. Despite a last-lap battle, Gibbs came out victorious, claiming his first NASCAR Cup Series victory.

Rich MARvelous Move of the Race

Ty Gibbs certainly turned heads as he battled Blaney, Larson, and Reddick in the closing laps of the Food City 500. However, a contender from further back caught our attention for the Rich MARvelous Move of the Race.

Todd Gilliland qualified P35 – his second-worst starting spot at Bristol Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Early in the race, he went a lap down, but was sitting in the Lucky Dog spot when Christopher Bell wrecked.

Fifteen laps later, his luck went the other direction when he was collected in the wreck with Bowman, SVG, and JHN.

Following this incident, his car made a dramatic turn, and he battled through the field.

Under caution, on Lap 384, Chris Lawson, crew chief for the No. 34, made the call for two tires. This gutsy move put Gilliland in the top five for the restart.

Gilliland hung on to his machine and ended the day P6, his first top 10 of the season – and his best Bristol Cup Series finish.

Kudos to Gilliland, FRM, and the No. 34 crew for sticking with it and battling at the Colosseum!
